"Adrien, there's something I need to show you."
His voice was hollow.

He clinged and nodded.

Adrian slowly released the boy and went to fetch the fax he'd received earlier.
"Here," he said softly, holding it to him.

Adrien rubbed at his eyes, looking weary at the thought of doing any reading at this hour, and apprehensive about reading in general. But he took it.
Of course he blinked immediately upon seeing his own image, and then turned the pages rapidly. Then flipped back to look at the picture again, and forward to the bit about being pronounced dead, and then practically threw the fax onto the floor and flailingly threw himself at Adrian to cling to him before he had another freak-out.

"There- Adrien, don't you see? You died in some other timeline before this could happen, you would never have been captured anyway..."

He shook and sobbed into his shoulder.

"If you feel that you were meant to die... somehow, you did. In some other... world..."

"But I escaped it, without punishment -"

"You didn't. They beheaded you, somehow- it's as though time diverged..."

"But they didn't- I'm still here - "

"Adrien, look at the picture!"
He thrust it out to him.

He blinked and looked at it tearily. "Suh - so?"

"It's you, love, it's you. The full report of your execution. You died in one way or another- perhaps afterward you- I don't know, you-"
He almost protested that some higher power had saved Adrien and brought him here, but he stopped. The implications were too terrible.

He sniffled and looked up at him, his eyes doing the thing. The one where he was impossibly pretty and tear-laced. "You mean zat I... I really did die, and zees is... like anozzeur chance?" he said softly in English.
It didn't seem possible, yet - if he existed in 1985 but those reports did, too, then - it was - if this were a different timeline, truly, the reports wouldn't exist...

"I... something of that sort."
