"Well, yes...and there's no shame in it if you don't have the knack, heh. All right, why not? Hmm, but you have to plan first, I know that much. We have to settle on what to make and then buy what we need."
Something simple, she thought, maybe like a soup or a stew. Those were easy, right?

"I will go fetch the book!" he said happily. "We can find something nice in that." He got up and steadied himself on the wall before he went to the door. "Won't be a second."

Because it wouldn't be far to go, she didn't object to him heading out or say anything about his head again. Besides, she had a feeling that she'd slip into nagging if she kept that up, and she didn't want to annoy him.
"All right, I'll be right here when you get back."

He nodded and walked across the hall to his neighbour, hoping she was actually home. He contemplated just going inside and grabbing the book if she wasn't. It was just borrowing it, right, he wasn't stealing. After he'd read it, he wouldn't need it anymore, it would all be stuck in his mind.
He knocked and waited, then knocked again. No answer. Carefully he tried the doorknob. It turned easily, but he hesitated. It would be rather uncivilised, right? But on the other hand, it was a book. He would do a lot for a book. Breaking and entering wasn't so bad, he wouldn't damage anything.
A memory stirred. When he was a boy, he'd stolen a book he really really wanted to read. A stern and very rigid policeman with dark intense eyes had apprehended him and scared the little Yann so much he never dared to do anything against the law again. But this really wasn't, he told himself. It was necessary.
And so he stepped into the room. And screamed.

Yuna, who had been planning out strategy on how to find the others, bolted to her feet, staff in both hands and held in an offensive position as she ran out of the apartment and across the way to where Yann was. She strained to see what was happening beyond him, in the room on the other side.
"What is it? What happened?"

Yann stared at the still figure on the floor, the blood pooling around her head. Her simple dress was torn and her neck was bruised. Even in his shaken state he could tell Yuna's powers wouldn't really help here anymore.
He turned away and buried his face in his hands.

Upon seeing the still form not so far away, she froze, a small gasp escaping her lips.
"Oh, no..."
Immediately, however, she snapped back to herself and moved past Yann, homing in on the body lying on the floor. No, there was no doubt that the woman was dead, and all Yuna could think was that when she had been pulled to Paris, that all of her Phoenix Down had been left back in Spira.
Worse, she knew, from having tried it before, that here at least, the Life spell did not work.
There was no bringing anyone back from the dead, by those means.
"Damn it!" She said sharply, hands tightening around the staff as she walked back over to Yann.

"W-what do we do now?" he said, his voice trembling. Who did this, and why? Was he still around? His hand slid to his pocket, but he wasn't wearing his coat and his hand closed around empty air. No knife to defend them if the murderer of this woman decided to add a few notches to his to-do-list.

"Where are the nearest authorities?"
She would follow the trail, if there was one or knew how to find one. She was no tracker, however, and none of those who had that expertise were with her at the moment. Asking for the police was the only thing she could think of.

"There's a policestation closeby..." he said distractedly. The image of the dead woman kept popping up in his mind when he closed his eyes, even if it was for a second, and his headache came back. "I don't even know her name..." he whispered.

"Come on," she said, taking him by the elbow and gently leading him away from the apartment.
"Let's go find him."

Yann didn't resist and walked with her like cattle. He looked over his shoulder a couple times but once they'd reached the stairs, he couldn't see the door anymore, let alone what was in the room.

Once they'd reached outside, Yuna paused, glancing about as she tried to see if there was anyone in uniform nearby. Not immediately spotting anybody, she turned down the street and kept going, her eyes moving this way and that.

Yann just followed blindly, more numb than earlier today. How can someone do something like that to another human being? He couldn't understand, how much he tried.

Eventually she found one of the gendarmes, but when she tried to tell him what they'd stumbled upon, she was blocked by the fact that he spoke a language she didn't know--French.
"Ahh...Yann! Explain to him?"
