He could deny it if he wanted to. Her logic wasn't exactly irrefutable.
"Do you want me to be your papa?" he asked, simply.

"Do you want to be my papa?" She responded.

"After tonight, I don't know if I know how," he answered honestly.

"It's not a science," came a soft voice from behind them. Adrienne was leaning against the doorjamb, unnoticed. "Whole lot of guesswork."
"Maman!" With remarkable energy for someone who'd been in a coma not half an hour ago, Evie leapt out of bed and ran to her mother, who lifted her up with practiced ease, drawing her close.
"Ne me fais pas peur comme ça, Evelyn," Adrienne choked, stroking Evie's hair.
((Don't scare me like that, Evelyn))

Chuck watched them enviously for a moment.
"I think I'd have a better time with it if it were."

Evie turned around and stage-whispered, "this is the part where you're supposed to come 'ug us both."

Unable to keep himself from grinning, Chuck did as she said and embraced them both-- more so the child than her mother on this occasion.

Evie poked Chuck.
"You never answered my question."
Adrienne, however, guessing what she had asked, intervened before Chuck had to say something he didn't want to.
"I think you deserve some sorbet for breakfast after your little adventure, non?" She asked Evie, who proclaimed her agreement quite loudly. They left for the kitchen.

Chuck watched them leave. When they were out of sight, he whispered to himself, "Yes, Evie..."

**NEW DAY**
Adrienne sighed and took another generous sip from her wine glass, staring into the fire.
She loved Chuck. She did. But whatever this was, it was unraveling fast. Poor Evie didn't know what to think, and frankly, neither did Adrienne. It would be like the last times--everything would be going fine, and then she and Chuck would stop trusting each other, and then it would explode. It wasn't fair to Evie, and it wasn't fair to her.
She was scared.
It was why she'd resolved to speak with him. England--she could move to England. She'd be closer to David, and she'd have the chance to make a new start where nobody knew her. Maybe she'd even get married, to someone she could trust and respect and like, maybe even love eventually. The teenage games had to stop--it ws time to grow up.
