"There is a time and a place for you, and you know that," Adrian said, taking a step toward him.

And Adrien really tried to see things from his end, he truly did, he tried to conjure up the memory of the night at the penthouse when Adrian had said he'd loved him... but he was horrified with himself to find that suddenly a few sweet hours on the weekend wasn't enough, not like it used to be, with Adrian Veidt or with anybody. He wanted more than he should ask from Adrian. How was he supposed to say that for him, Adrian was always appropriate?
The feeling had made sense, but trying to articulate it now it sounded so - so stupid. Of course it was. Adrien was the callboy. He was supposed to be ready for whenever Adrian wanted him. It was not the other way around.
Adrien, suddenly breathless, inhaled sharply and then kind of gasped, and tore a glove off almost manically to reach up his hand, shakingly, to his eyes to brush the tears away before his makeup streaked.

Adrian seized his wrist and pulled him toward himself.
"Just- just go change- now-"

Adrien dug his heels into the carpet immediately and pulled back in abject terror, body sinking down to try and cement his weight, to no avail.
"Adrian - don't hit me - please - "

Adrian reacted a bit as though he himself had been hit. He abruptly released Adrien's wrist and stepped back, the horror he was feeling reaching full expression on his face.
"Adrien- Adrien, I would never-"

Letting go of Adrien's wrist sent Adrien tumbling to the floor, where he reacted as disoriented as a drunk trying to scramble up again, heels skidding as though he couldn't quite manage. In truth, his knees had felt weak and it was hard to get his body to respond, and they weren't exactly stable shoes to begin with.
He stumbled back a few steps once he was up.
"It's just that you're really - " he said in a sort of fatigued crying voice. His hat had been knocked off in the meantime. "I thought you'd like if I was - "

"If you were what?"
The anger had faded into firm exasperation in the wake of the shattered look on Adrien's face.

"More like - "
It wouldn't be apparent at first that the sort of shaky swinging he made with his arm was meant to refer to Micaela's dress, but he aimlessly repeated it a few times and therefore it should have been clear at some point.
"I thought - I thought - "
It was like the words meant some kind of magic charm. But then the boy's face crumpled.
"I thought you'd think I was pretty - "
Don't cry don't cry then you definitely won't be -

And he did make a rather pretty girl, which only made matters worse.
"Adrien- I have a meeting in ten minutes. Did you bring a change of clothes?"

"I changed in the bathroom by the elevator - "
He stammered out the floor name.

"Just- wait in the bathroom and I'll be back for you after the meeting-"

Like a very addled butterfly that had hit a window and was straggling to fly afterwards, Adrien came towards him really quickly, trying to turn his face against his chest, putting his arms around him, mumbling something in a voice too shaky for anything to be understood. He still sounded very drunk.

"What's that?"

He said something like, "but it's okay, it's okay, baby, we can - just let's - " as he stood on tiptoe and tried to kiss Adrian like a needy, desperate, lonely woman you might have met staggering out of a bar she'd just been thrown out of. You might have expected him to taste strongly of vodka or something. It would certainly have suited the way his hands suddenly managed to be everywhere, grasping and groping and rubbing, all at once, with utter lack of shame and a bizarre sense of bad timing.

"Get away from me-"
He pulled Adrien off at arm's length again.
