"Merci."
He led her out to the dancefloor area, easily moving into the dance.

Laurent stealthily rolled his eyes. Olivier didn't have much imagination when it came to even Evelyn--just how much did he think she'd look forward to a dance filled with inane conversation?
At that moment, a rather lovely figure walked past him, and on impulse Laurent asked the girl to dance.

*You could only dance with someone a certain amount of times before it became boring, especially when the steps, while well-executed, were repetitive and pre-determined.*
"It's a lovely night for a party outside..."
*Oh, Lord, she'd been driven to discussing the weather.*

"Absolutely--I was glad when it turned out that we'd planned the evening just right, as there'd been rumblings of rain for a while now."
He inwardly winced. Weather conversations were always a bad sign.
"Ah, been to the opera lately?"

*Well, it was better than the weather.*
"My parents have season tickets, but we haven't gone just yet. I think we're seeing the next production in a week or so..."

There was a lot of gossip and rumor swirling around the opera house, but Olivier being not one to take up such things wouldn't have thought to bring it up. Also, that was something Laurent would do.
"I do as well. Simply waiting for the season to start--it seems a bit late doing so, this year."

Laurent had still been discreetly watching Olivier and Evelyn, and wanted after a while to go cut in and dance with her, but he couldn't do that thanks to his current companion who, while pretty, was rather dull and a bit dim-witted. She hadn't been getting any of the hints he'd been giving her that they should take a break at the next dance.

*Evie, however, made a very big deal out of enjoying herself as much as possible--laughed at jokes, smiled becomingly, looked modestly away at all the right moments.*

Olivier completely enjoyed the dance, laughing with her, and all the while smiling the sort of smile one finds on a smitten person. Oh, but was he smitten, and didn't hide his disappointment when the dance ended.

*Evie cried out in half-delight, half-relief when a very tall blond asked to cut in.*
"David! I didn't know you were going to be here!"
*He picked her up and spun her around, laughing. When he set her down, she immediately embraced him, fitting in somewhere underneath his collarbone, beaming widely. He subsequently twirled her off into the dance, moving gracefully and speaking in a very familiar manner.*

Laurent had been about to move up and cut in himself, but stopped in his tracks when David showed up and swept Evelyn into his arms. Irritated, he stayed by the refreshment stand, subtly glaring at this interruption.

Olivier, for his part, had a lot more grace in the situation and politely bowed out, though his words came out a bit mumbled. Feeling his heart sink a little, he'd shuffled out of the way, noting Laurent's expression as he did so.
He didn't feel quite as bad after seeing Laurent's face.

*They danced beautifully together, finishing up two sets as a pair--an honor which Evie had, as yet, bestowed on neither Laurent nor Olivier.*
*He leaned down and whispered into her ear with a mischievous look on his face. He was not, despite appearances, whispering a naughty joke or sweet nothings: he had only meant to ask her,*
"Who on earth is that surly fellow glaring at us?"
*Evie blushed demurely, as if embarrassed or flattered by a compliment. In reality she was remembering where she'd been with said "surly fellow" approximately an hour before.*
"Laurent Desmarais. Related to our host."
"Ohhh do I sense a tendresse?" *He teased. She stomped on his foot and glared indignantly.* "Ow!"
"There is no such thing, David d'Enjolras."
"That's 'Vicomte' to you."
"Oh shut up, asshole."
"Such language!"
*It continued this way, teasing and smiling and laughing, until finally the second set ended and he led her over to the refreshment table. Someone had poured a very bad gin into the punch, and rendered it undrinkable to all but the most uncaring of guests.*

That surly fellow had noticed the change in the punch, but of course had said nothing and had stayed around to watch the reactions of the other party members to the drink.

Olivier didn't realize what was wrong with the drink until, during Evelyn and David's second dance, he'd gone to get a drink himself and then gagged on it.
"What in the...?"
Laurent chuckled behind him.
"Looks like someone was feeling a bit creative with the punch."
Olivier turned to Laurent, eyeing him suspiciously.
"I don't suppose you had anything to do with it?"
"Hardly. I was away over by the roses when it happened, I think."
Olivier glanced down at the punchbowl with a sigh.
"This happens every single time..."
