Megan sighed and stood to face him again.
"It's... it's Soren, okay?"

"Soren" his shoulders drooped and he exhaled.
He didn't need anything else in his life making it more awkward.
"Oh, well is that so bad?"

"Well, it's... you know, it's complicated." Megan sighed. "He's sweet, and he's kind, and he's..."
She paused.
"Well, he's not human."

"So?" He wiped his palms on his pants "What does that have to do with anything?"

"Well, you know..."
She bit her lower lip again.
"Dan, do you think it's weird that I've got a crush on a giant... bird... man... creature?"

"Well yes" he laughed "but when it comes to matters of the heart, what does appearance or even... I guess race, have to do with it?"

"I met him back at the Xavier place," Megan continued. "Most of the mutants there still look pretty human, but not all of them, and, well, you can guess which group he falls into."
She twisted her hands together and paced back and forth over the floor.
"And anyway, at first he really freaked me out. Understandably, I guess. I mean, he's that tall, and he has that kind of raspy voice, and- well, you saw. He doesn't even have hands. They're cla- no, more like talons, Dan..."
Megan sat down on the end of the bed.
"But then I started talking to him, and, well... The world isn't fair, Dan. His own parents were scared of him- their own child, and they gave him up..."

"Yes I saw, Me-" he let her finish, she was obviously very concerned about this. Standing up he took her shoulders, if not to just stop her from pacing, she was starting to make him dizzy. "Megan, what does it matter what he looks like? Really?"
Letting his hands drop to the side of her arms "If you care about him, that's really, all that matters, trust me."

"It'd be different if he were just ugly, okay?" Megan said abruptly, starting to cry. "I don't think he's ugly, not at all. I think he's beautiful. You know, in a bird-ish sort of way..."
She put her face in her hands for a moment in exasperation, and then pulled them away again, leaving small mascara smudges in their wake.
"Shit, I'm crying. I'm sorry, I'm ranting..."

"Oh, oh god" he pulled her to him and shh'd her "Megan, is it really that bad?" He rubbed her back and swayed, the way a father would. "Is it?"

"The thing is, Dan... well, there aren't bird-people where I come from. Or superheroes, or purple lynxes, or Egyptian palaces in the Antarctic tundra, or anything there is here. It's so normal, Dan. And I want to go back there and see my family again sometime, and I don't know how the hell I'm supposed to explain to my mom and dad that I want to live in this crazy other world I wandered into, with a man that looks more like a bird- I mean, does Soren strike you as a man you can take home to your mom?"

He understood, really he did, it was just, he didn't.
It was hard for him to understand, even in Megan's situation, love was love to him, even if mom and dad didn't understand. But he didn't come from the same place she did.
"I don't know what to say, I really don't."

"I can't exactly go and tell my mom that I want to stay with a giant bird..."
