"You were right. I was a coward... and I might still be one but I'm not going anywhere. Not this time, not ever."

"You know we have to communicate and compromise and... oh bother it."
*She put her hands on either side of his face and pulled him down so she could kiss him properly.*

*He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer and he kissed her. He hadn't realized how must he had missed her kiss until then.*

*She reluctantly pulled her face away, but not her body.*
"Evie still hasn't any idea who you are, if she walked in and saw a stranger..."

*He let out a short sigh.*
"But I'm the farthest thing from a stranger."

*She rested one hand against his cheek.*
"She's got no idea. The few times she's asked I've given her a satisfactorily vague answer and prayed she wouldn't ask again, and Fernand... he died long before she could remember." *Her face hardened at the mention of her former husband.*

*Chuck froze.*
"What?" *Was all he said. His face was unreadable.*

"He died of heart failure the day after Evelyn was born." *She said tersely. It wasn't technically a lie--the curse she'd employed did indeed kill by stopping the heart.*

"But Jack didn't--"
*Chuck stopped himself. He was an idiot to have believe anything his uncle had told him.*
"I can't believe this..." *he muttered to himself.*

*She frowned.*
"I assume you were misinformed on some topic or another by your... esteemed uncle."

"And he enjoyed it," *he said calmly despite wanting to punch a wall in. He couldn't believe he was the only family he had.*

"There's clearly nothing he enjoys more than making other people miserable, I don't see why--"
*But Evie poked her head in.*
"Maman?"
"And how did you escape your governess this time?" *Adrienne asked wryly, as her daughter sidled over and leaned into her skirts, looking at Chuck with large eyes.*
"Maman, c'est qui cet homme?"
*Adrienne looked at him evenly, a subtle nod granting him permission to say whatever he was comfortable with.*
Your call.
((Mama, who's that man?))

"I'm a friend of your mother, sweetheart," *he said, answering her question easily.*
*Chuck couldn't tell her. Turning anyone's world upside down was hard, but doing it to a child was simply cruel.*
"Adrienne... I think I should leave for today."

*But Adrienne hadn't heard him, after he'd said he was a friend, she'd bent down to Evie's level and was speaking to her.*
"Evie, when Maman has company, what are you supposed to do?" *She said, not without affection.*
*Evie sighed.*
"Mind Miss Geraldine."
"Exactly. Now where did you escape her this time?" *Mother and daughter shared a conspiratorial smile. Evie giggled.*
*The governess arrived a moment later and collected her wayward, giggly charge. Adrienne stood.*
"What was it you said?"

"I can't stay here," *he said, looking at her seriously. The panic he was feeling was already written on his face despite the fact that he was trying his best to hide it.*
