*Anneke managed to summon a smile in the midst of her private heartache.* "Hello..." *Anneke bit her lip and nervously rubbed her arms.* "I wasn't too awful, was I?" *she asked ruefully.*

*Mary slipped inside the auditoruim, her red silk dress swirly around her ankles. She watched as several girls did voice warmups, and dancers practiced routines. Seating herself just behind the large group of chattering girls, Mary watched the others audition, after several moments, she was called to approach the stage. she wasn't nervous, after all, she was not going for a lead role, but if she wanted to remain in the opera house, she knew she had to work. Besides, she wouldn't mind landing Fantine's role anyways. Standing center, she closed her eyes and composed herself before singing* "There was a time when men were kind When their voices were soft And their words inviting There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting There was a time Then it all went wrong
I dreamed a dream in time gone by When hope was high And life worth living I dreamed that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving Then I was young and unafraid And dreams were made and used and wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart And they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side He filled my days with endless wonder He took my childhood in his stride But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he'll come to me That we will live the years together But there are dreams that cannot be And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I'm living So different now from what it seemed Now life has killed the dream I dreamed."

*Bijan leaned back in his chair, he was going to like being surrounded by all of these angels in human bodys.* Yes it will be nice, *Bijan thought with a smile, * just as long as my secret remains secret.

*Gabrielle smiled warmly at Anneke* "you were wonderful" *she said, streching out her long legs, her pale skin constrasting with her red pointes*

*Anneke grins happily, feeling a ray of sunshine in her cloudy day for the first time.* "Oh, thank you! That's just such a nice thing for you to say!"

*Anneke laughed richly, a wry smirk on her face.* "I've found I'm not at all accustomed to softness, in any case. I'm more comfortable around people who dispense with useless niceties and chit-chat, anyways." *She smiled brightly at Gabrielle.* "You're a rare find in a place like this."

*Gabrielle returned the smile* "You're pretty rare yourself then. I know what you mean about useless niceties, I find you get to know people better that way"

*Anneke shrugged lightly.* "Never had time to be coy. It gets in the way of surviving."

*Anneke fell silent as well and turned back to watching the other girls.* No matter what anyone says, no doubt those girls are better than I am. Listen to them! It's like a chorus of angels...I probably sound like a carrion crow in comparison...Gabrielle was probably just being nice...but at least she sounds like she could understand what I mean. Too many of these girls are too used to being coddled daughters of society and noble blood. Not like me, an orphan whose only remaining family practically ignores her...no one can ever understand that... *She sighed.*
((Yeah, I think wryly is a word.))

Marianne glanced around to see a handsome man settle into the back row. She had never seen him before, but her gaze was instantly riveted to his intense golden eyes and confident posture. Who could he be?

Dominic slipped into the wings to watch the audition. He had work to do - a stagehand's work was never done - but he couldn't resist taking a brief break to watch the young women try to impress the patron with their soaring voices or elegant dancing. He was no expert on the arts, but he'd been working around it all his life and he knew talent when he saw it.

Aria sighed and began to mentally think of the songs she knew. There were so many that would be perfect for an audition, but they were all so high! Perhaps she was doomed after all. She never should have tried to become an opera prima donna.
She pushed back her long, flowing hair and looked around. Everyone else looked so confident as they waited their turn. They probably had crystal soprano voices, and could all sing at least a full octave above her. As her gaze brushed past the stage, she thought she saw someone standing in the wings. She smiled to herself and went back to thinking of a good audition song.

Bijan caught the gaze of one of the girls on stage, Bijan smiled and gave her a little wave, she was a beautiful girl, of course around here, who wasn't?
