"No, we aren't," Alex said, but her voice was neither distant nor distracted. "And glad I am for it. I suppose it's well enough for some people. I suppose there are those who long for a husband and family and a life that doesn't change, day to day. But what purpose would there be in it for those who don't care for it? Why should I be made to wed, when I'd much rather play the boy myself? If maturity means giving up Alex, and drink and women and song, what is its value to me?"
She watched Rosalind for a moment, afraid of bringing up things that had so upset her before.
"If you did marry, Rosalind, for your own purposes and not those of another, I would wish you every joy it might bring you. But in the meantime, my sweet, what does maturity matter? It's merely a word. We are who we are, regardless."
