*Donavan took the opportunity to hunker down in the clover a bit away from her, giving her space while managing to keep civil conversation.*
"Birds still got family." *He offered gently, though he kept his eyes on the flora before him, fiddling with the petals of a flower.* "A mate. Someone to share the loneliness."

"I've seen enough of mates," she muttered with a level of wrath that even surprised herself. "I think I'd rather be lonely...as long as I was safe."

*He deserved that one, Donavan chided himself silently. Pursing his lips, he nodded tightly.*
"I...I'm sorry." *He whispered. How could he have been so insensitive? He wasn't sure how to make it up to her.*
"I didn't mean...but...is there anything I can do? To make you feel...safer?" *He asked meekly.*

She chuckled, glancing at him and realizing how inadvertently miserable he was in that moment.
"You? No...don't trouble yourself. You've done so much already."
She gingerly lay back on the grass, propping one arm behind her head, looking with some wonder at the blue sky overhead.
"Some things can't be helped, by anyone," she mused.

God can.
*But Donavan figured that saying such would only hurt any chances that he had at making this ok. He scooted a little closer so he could keep his voice lower. Not that he was eager to speak. She looked so peaceful there. And so he gave her some time, busying himself with weaving a simple band of longer grass and a few flowers.*

Nance's free hand toyed with the cool grass beside her for a moment, then she turned her head to look at Donovan.
"What do you think happens to us when we die? I mean, besides dying, the stop-breathing thing, the no-heartbeat thing...does everything stop?"

*Donavan froze at the non seqitur, but it was not long before he pursed his lips and answered.*
"I think...part of us stays on. That we go on to a better place." *His words were gentle.* "A place of light."

"Where it's always warm?" asked Nance, her eyes drifting shut with a small smile as she tried to imagine such a place.

"Mmmhmm." *Donavan confirmed softly, not wishing to disturb her growing serenity. But he tried not to look at her, lest he be enraptured be her glow.*
"And there's a gentle breeze that picks up the soft scent of hyacinth and the sea."

"The sea?" Her eyes remained shut, but her brow creased slightly. "I remember the crossin' from England...smelled like bile and rats in the hold. The docks smelled of dead fish an' tar."
She laughed a little, the sound miniscule, but it was laughter all the same.
"...what's a hyacinth?"

*Her laughter was infectious and Donavan found himself giggling softly in answer.*
"It's a flower." *He clarified gently.* "And not all coasts smell like that." *He assured her.*
"Up north, that is, well...by the cliffs you get a nice breeze nearly all the time. It keeps the fish from smelling too much." *He smiled.*

"I liked the wind up on decks, when we were sailin'," she murmured. "Liked it better than the wind that cuts down the streets in winter, sometimes. Kickin' up garbage and soot...I hate it."

*Donavan's smile faded, his brow lowering as he wrestled for a moment with his thoughts. Finally he fessed them up, offering softly.*
"Why do you stay then?" *Wincing a bit, he tried to smooth it with a clarification.* "I mean, maybe you'd be happier somewhere that wasn't so...urban." *He tried to keep his tone positive and supportive.*

She turned her head, opening her eyes to look at him across the grass.
"T'isn't a choice to stay or go...it's all I know," she said, with a kind of quiet defeat that yet held its own strength as she believed so firmly in its truth. "I've spent all my life in the city...if not London, now Paris. Happiness...the kind of happiness you mean--peace and prosperity and all those good kind of things...they're not for me. Not for people like me. Closest we get to happiness is enough warm gin to make it all disappear, for a while."

*Her sadness was infectious and overwhelming to one that had had so little relative hardship in his life. Donavan was quiet for a long moment. He couldn’t believe that it was so hopeless. God wouldn’t let it be.*
“I…I’m sorry.” *He whispered finally. There was something mulling around in his brain that he couldn’t quite figure out just yet, but he found his lips moving on their own accord.* “But if it wasn’t. I mean, if there was a way…a way out…would you take it?”
