"The simple presence of the word 'respectful' in there proves my point," Yager teased. "You're as full of it as a Christmas goose."

"I could be rude...but I don't feel like it." He didn't know why, but when around Yager Krolock didn't feel like being the broody, austere Lord of the Castle. He felt more like his younger human self, who'd been more of a smart-ass and less gloomy.

Yager chuckled. "Well, aren't you a perfect gentleman." He winked.
"Still, no use in claiming such things yet... we don't know what's happened to your library yet."

The library doors came into view just at that moment. Without any hesitation, he pulled them open and peered into the room.
The candelabra were still lit, not that he needed the light. Still, he could see that nothing was out of the ordinary...so far.
"It looks all right..." He said, walking in.

Everything was in its rightful place, of course, but in the corner stood an exhausted--but somehow quite happy-looking--purple vampire.
At the sight of the two men, he grinned.
"Fifty-thousand, three-hundred twenty-seven!" he announced hoarsely.

Yager stared at the purple thing for a few moments.
Had it really counted every single book here? It sure look at it, judging by the voice and obvious fatigue.
"Er... well done?" he tried, glancing over at Krolock for support.

Krolock's eyebrows went up in surprise. He hadn't expected the...Count?...to, er, count all of the books.
"Well done, then. Perhaps you should take a break?"

What they didn't understand, apparently, was that is was a compulsion. The Count could not explain this, exactly, because it was so much a part of him that it wasn't even conscious. He just had to do this, and he became very uncomfortable when he was thwarted. And it was so deeply internalized that he perceived it as pleasure.
"Yes," he agreed, beaming and tired. "I find myself fatigued!"

"Well, then I suggest you start counting sheep!"
Yager's somewhat forced cheerfulness faded abruptly when he realized that that might have been a very wrong thing to say.

It is not clear how a puppet managed to look both exhilarated and weary at the same time, but the Count's compulsion won out over his fatigue.
"Sheep!" he cried. "I love! Counting! Sheep!" He looked around. If there were sheep, he had to count them. But he saw none.

"Metaphorical sheep," Yager said softly, taking pity on the little guy.
He might be purple, but at least he didn't sparkle.
"I think it's high time you got some rest," he added, taking a few steps and scooping the puppet up into his arms while trying to ignore the dude with his hand up the Count's rear.
"Is there anywhere we can put him?" the vampire hunter asked, looking at Krolock with a look that might be best described as 'Can I keep him?'

The Count looks somewhat indignant, but it was mostly cute, at Yager's treatment. Then he decided there was something oddly familiar about being so handled, and calmed down. He wasn't entirely sure what a metaphor was, but it should be noted that the concept of counting something that never actually ran out would probably have fried his stuffing.

The look Yager was giving Krolock was setting off warning bells in the back of his mind, and he wondered just what he was getting himself into as he said:
"Well...I suppose if he sleeps, you can...find a room blocked from the sun."
He had no idea what the sun would do to the purple vampire, but it would hardly be charitable to try and test it.

"Brilliant, thank you!" Yager smiled at the count.
A spectator might half expect that statement to be followed by a one-armed hug and a kiss on the cheek, but all that came out was; "Perhaps you could lead the way? I'd hate to get lost."

The Count didn't understand why they were speaking about him as if he weren't even there.
"Sleep is healthy!" he announced. "Sleep is necessary!"
