"Cluont told you to take care of the files, didn't he?"
Javert knew exactly how many years he would get for murdering a fellow officer, but when he saw that beaming face... if it hadn't been for his experience with Jason last night it would have been worth it.
"Do I need to remind you of the consequences of disregarding a direct order from a senior officer, Lambert?"

Lambert blinked, looking rather like he'd been hit with a newspaper.
"Oh!" he said involuntarily. "I... Inspector Cluont said he'd be out for a week, and I thought he'd understand you needed someone to go out on patrol with..."
But it was true, it was an order, and he was bound to follow it. It was right to follow it. He swallowed painfully, and did what he also thought was right.
"Do you... want me to find someone to go with you who's free?"
It broke his little heart to utter those words, but he consoled himself with the knowledge that Javert knew he was doing the right thing.

"I am well capable of doing that myself, Lambert."
Javert was feeling like he'd kicked a three-legged kitten again. He hated that feeling.
"You just get on with the paperwork, I'll check it for you when I get back." There. That ought to make up for that terrible feeling a bit, right?
Of course, it would make Javert suffer, a lot... but with Jason's hate for paperwork the inspector would end up having to check Lambert's reports no matter what, so why not throw the boy a bone?

Lambert's new smile was timid and hopeful. "Of course, I understand," he said staunchly, having decided to admire Javert for his attention to protocol and the sacrifice he was making so that Lambert could finish paperwork. And all for Cluont, whom Javert hated!
He truly was a great man.
Lambert saluted smartly. "Good luck, sir."

"Thank you, Lambert."
Oh, damn... he'd gone and done it again.
Javert saluted back, since a lower ranking officer couldn't lower his arm until the one with the higher rank had done so. While the inspector didn't like the boy much, leaving Lambert with one hand to his forehead for the remainder of the day would be a bit cruel... and Javert wasn't cruel.
Another nod and Javert moved swiftly up the stairs, to safety.

Lambert, though disappointed, could coast the rest of the day on Javert's thanks and a blueberry muffin. And that was just what he did, though he also wrote Javert a very nice note thanking him for his consideration that morning regarding the proper procedure to follow, and for looking out for him and his career, which he valued so highly as he one day wished to become Javert's equal, or as near to it as was humanly possible. It was, of course, on pink stationary, in Lambert's very neat hand.
