"A'ight." *Lark looked to Justus with a cautious smile.* "Thank you." *She added. But that didn't help her with what to do with herself, though she did feel a little better about being there.*
"Well...can I get ya'll something? You must be....well, it was a long trip." *Her voice was soft, eyes sympathetic.*

"Uh..." *Justus shook his head.* "Thank ya, no...I'm alright. How 'bout you?" *he asked Jack. The boy thought for a minute.*
"...got any milk, please?" *he said softly, looking up at Lark.*

"Uh, sure." *Lark answered with a careful smile to the boy.* "I'll get you some right quick."
*She stood, pausing briefly as she tried to remember where Lizzie kept everything. But she found the milk and several cupboards later, a glass. Pouring it carefully, she returned and offered it to the child.*
"There you are." *She hoped it would be some small comfort. It would have been terrible to lose one's mother so young. Would he even remember her as he aged? Lark's heart went out to him.*

*Jack murmured a "thank you" after his father absently nudged him in the ribs as he accepted the glass of milk. Jake offered a smile to the boy before he looked at Justus.*
"So...I 'spect ya'll be wantin' me an' th'boys t'help with startin' a ranch out here?"
*Justus nodded.*
"Doubt I could handle it any other way..."

"You're welcome."
*Lark offered a nervous smile. That would be nice, right? Maybe it'd bring in enough that Jake wouldn't have to work at the Opera. Maybe they'd be able to start a family sooner. That was, if he'd want to sharing a house and all. Her lips tightened a moment.*
"That sounds...real nice." *Lark offered supportively, though her voice still sounded odd in the conversation.*

*Jake turned to Lark with a slow smile.*
"Really? Ya think...ya think you'd wanna try that?"

*Lark looked to Jake, a little surprised at his surprise. She shrugged slightly.*
"Well...why not? We both seem to know 'nough about horses. And well..." *She glanced to Justus with a small gesture.*
"It ain't like your family don't have experience in it."

*Jake looked back to his brother.*
"In that case...I'm with ya. An' Jamie an' Kip'll be, too, if they know what's good for 'em."

*Lark hoped that the decision made him happy. That's really all she wanted. Not that she wouldn't love to keep with horses. She squeezed Jake's hand again supportively.*
"Um...will ya'll be staying..."
here? *She wondered at the cramped quarters.*
"For dinner?" *She winced slightly, hoping that she wasn't asking something that was to be assumed.*

"That's right kind of ya," *said Justus, nodding.*
"Hey, you can put up in Lizzie's room, you n' Jack," *said Jake quickly.* "Liz's got some idea she's movin' out with a friend of hers."

*Lark seemed a little surprised by the news but was content with the solution.*
"Oh! I didn't know they'd found a place yet. But that would be just the thing." *She smiled easier.*
"You two having your own room and all." *She glanced affectionately to Jack and Justus in turn.*
((Oh dear, you know that Jake/Lizzie conversations gonna be interesting, giving away her room without talking to her about it...))

((Uh oh...well, yeah. She WANTED to move out, Jake could point out.))
*Justus nodded.*
"Thank you," *he said.* "Once we get a property, start work on buildin' a real place fer all of us...big enough--I expect Jack'll have some cousins by n' by--summer's comin' on and we can pitch a tent fer Jack an' me while we build."

((Yeah, but since when is Lizzie one for logic? )) *Lark's head ducked, the tips of her ears warming again and she squeezed Jake's hand like she needed an anchor. But she managed to meet Justus's eyes again and nod.* "I'm sure we'll figure it all out. Get to everything in turn." *After all, she had two months left in her contract that her sueauthor had totally forgotten about. They'd have to be careful til then at least.*

"Sure," *said Jake, nodding.* "Would you like t'go freshen up 'r somethin'?"
*Justus sighed and nodded.* "That'd be nice."
"Stop actin' like yer a guest, then--g'won and git some rest."

*Lark nodded in agreement with a warm smile, taking the emptied glass from Jack to set on the counter as his father hoisted him up and disappeared down the hall. Once alone, she exhaled slowly, like a weight had lifted.*
"Oh, Jake..." *So much had happened and she still wasn't sure if it put them in a better situation or not. There was a lot of bad with the potential good.*
"You a'ight?" *She asked gently, slipping down on his lap and wrapping her arms around him.*
