*Her voice became frosty and her eyes oozed disgust.* "I decided long ago I wouldn't depend on anything--not a man, not money, not connections--nothing but myself. When and if whatever it is between myself and your nephew ends, I'll return to France unscathed. Don't assume I'm some kind of American bimbo with no head on her shoulders."

"American bimbo..." *he repeated with a chuckle, clearly amused.*
*Leaning back into his chair, he gazed at her coolly.*
"I think you're in deeper than you think."
*Chuck had been watching them the entire time and didn't like what he saw. He told his lawyer that he'd call him back later and headed back.*
*Jack watched his nephew walk towards their table.*
"And whatever you two are planning, will fail," *he said in a deceptively friendly tone. His eyes, though, were serious and made it clear that it was a warning.*

"Your uncle seems to think we're up to something." *She drawled to Chuck, looking bored and seeming generally as if she wondered why Jack would even think she'd consider something to plebeian.*
"Plus en particulier, il sait que nous planifions quelque chose, et que je ne suis pas seulement le saveur de la semaine."
*It was a gamble, that Jack didn't speak French. But he liked to show off, and he likely would have tried to speak it to her already if he did.*
((More specifically, he knows that we're planning something, and that I'm not just the flavor of the week.))

*Chuck looked over at Jack then back at Adrienne. Easily, he leaned an elbow on the back of her chair and leaned a bit closer.*
"Mon oncle s'admire lui-même trop, et il pense que je lui rassemble. Le saveur de la semaine est son habitude, et pas le mien. En plus, je n'ai jamais voulu garder un secret que nous planifions quelque chose. Il ne sait pas les détailles; ne t'en fait pas."
*He smiled calmly, reached over and grazed her chin affectionately.*
((My uncle admires himself too much, and he thinks I take after him. Flavor of the week is his habit, and not mine. Also, I never wanted to keep it a secret that we were planning something. He doesn't know the details; don't worry.))

*For all Jack knew, they could have been murmuring sweet nothings, because, playing along, she leaned forward and gave him a quick (but sensual) kiss.*
"Je m'inquiete parce que c'est logique. Quelqu'un doit rester conscienscieux... mais j'essayerai de me decontracter."
((I worry because it makes sense to. Someone's got to stay rational here... but i'll try to relax.))

*He smiled at her words and kissed her once more.*
"I think we should head back to the hotel," *he said to her then glanced at Jack who was looking at the two of them with a knowing smirk.*

*As disgusted as she was to pander to Jack's expectations, she gave Chuck a tiny smile and lowered her eyelids a fraction.*
"I think that's an excellent idea."

*Chuck slipped an arm around her waist and turned to Jack.*
"Jack," *he acknowledged with a nod before getting up.*
"Chuck," *Jack said, stopping him.* "You two should stop by the office sometime. Take a look around, see how I've changed things up... maybe meet the board members. Who knows: maybe you'll want a job there."
*If it were not for Chuck's resolve to stay stoic, he would've punched Jack across the face.*
"Perhaps. Though, with all the work that needs to be done, I would imagine that my presence would be distracting. Bart wouldn't want that."
"Bart..." *Jack said with a short laugh.* "Bart's dead. I run the place now so don't worry."
*Chuck's eyes grew cold. He couldn't stay there any longer if he didn't want to make a scene.*
"Right," *he said then turned and walked out.*

*Adrienne went with him.*
"So don't mind me if I vomit out the window of the limo." *She said cheerfully.* "That was... enlightening. And horrifying."

*Chuck didn't respond. He stayed silent as they waited for his car and things stayed the same as they got in and drove off. The city lights were a blur and Chuck stared at them as he contemplated what had just happened...*

"Hey." *She put a small hand on either side of his face and turned his head so he was looking at her.* "He shouldn't have said that about your father."

*He turned his face away and stared out the window again.*
"What? About his being dead? He's actually right about that," *he said glibly.*

"Well if you're going to make this difficult... what I meant was the fact that he acts as if your father never existed, like he would even be where he was without having been put there by a more successful older brother." *One hand returned to her own side, and the other dropped to his hand.*

*It took him a moment but his looked down at her hand on his. After a brief glance at her, he turned so that he was facing forward. His hand stayed still.*
"I'd be nothing without him too. Despite how much Jack resented my father, Bart actually cared about him."

"All the more reason he shouldn't be such a jackass when he's talking about him." *She said, with just a hint of humor.*
