"It's not you. Really, it's not."
*She scratched her head lightly.*
"It's me. I feel shame around me."

*Donavan could understand that in a way. He'd been the freak before many times. Especially when he was younger. His hand slowly moved to brush back a stray lock of her hair, but to touch her skin.*
"But I would like this to be a safe place for you. If you are ever able to...feel that." *He lowered his eyes, worried he'd said too much again.*
"I'm sorry. I just say things. I shouldn't."

*Nance smiled, a little, and slowly.*
"I think I'd be safer with you than with anyone," *she said.* "Here I am half-dead and yet somehow I feel stronger than you...or I could be, if I really wanted to rally myself."

*Donavan's eyes lit up in new found hope. It was enough for now. A seed planted that only time would show if it was able to take root.*
"Well, I don't mean to push you. How about we just start with some soup first?"
*He smiled gently, trying to keep his emotions reined in.*

"Soup would be nice," *she said softly.*

*Soup Donavan could manage. He stood carefully, his knees a bit achy as he retrieved a bowl for her. He set it on the small table next to her.*
"It's hot." *He stated rather obviously. But he offered her a spoon politely.*

*Nance took the spoon and dipped it into the bowl, blowing lightly on it for a moment before tasting it.*
"...it's good," *she said encouragingly.*

*Donavan's gut was to apologize, but realizing that compared to what she was likely used to, it probably was good. So he smiled appreciatively.*
"Thank you. I just hope that it fills you up."
*He hesitated, thinking maybe he should get a second bowl for himself. He turned back toward the kitchen.*
"Just want to make sure you get to feeling better."

"I feel better already," *she said with a small smile when she thought he wasn't looking.*

*Donavan missed most of it, truth be told, as he wandered back for his own food. But he turned slightly to check on her at the door and to answer her politely.*
"I'm glad."
*Worrying that he might be making a goofy face or smiling too much, he ducked into the other area, procuring a bowl. With it in had, he returned, but chose the chair instead, giving her some room as he ate quietly. And rather slowly.*

"...h-have you always been an artist?" *asked Nance, struggling a bit as she clearly wasn't used to having to make social conversation. Speech was perfunctory, and sullen silence filled the gaps in her life.*

*Donavan seemed grateful for the effort, readily replying with a smile.*
"I'm sure my mother would say so. Though...I wasn't any good for a long while."
At least until...well that.

*Donavan's brow furrowed for a moment, trying to figure out a way to put it that wasn't a lie, but also didn't make her think he was any crazier than she already probably did.*
"I...I guess it was just fate." *He pursed his lips, hesitant to continue.*
