He smiled back.
"I can't imagine what it must be like."

"I don't know if I could describe it...or if it is anything like what you may sense..."
*She reached out towards his shoulder, but instead of resting upon it, her fingertips trailed through his seemingly-solid image, across his chest.*
"...do you feel that?"

He shook his head.
"No. Not even when I've walked through a door or a wall."

"Strange..." *she said slowly, drawing back her hand and wiping away the traces of her tears.*
"Forgive me."

*Carolina smiled and nodded.*
"...so..." *she cleared her throat.* "What was this house like, when you were master here?I'm in need of a story."

"Ah. Well, there were more family members here...I remember an endless stream of cousins that I'm sure ran our poor Mrs. Denby ragged. All those children, trying to sneak into the kitchen and steal a sweet...
It seemed so much more cheerful back then. Or maybe that was simply my mother--she was always a bright spot, in no matter what happened. I miss her being that way."

"Mrs. Denby...she has been here so long?" *Carolina sounded astonished.*

He grinned.
"When we were children my cousins and I used to joke that she was immortal. I have memories of her being here when I just a little boy."

*Carolina giggled.*
"It seems that way, doesn't it?"

"God only knows how she really is...or the gardener! I saw him the other day, and it's the same man that has always been there, as well."

"Perhaps they're the brownie elves who keep house..."

Or like Tuck Everlasting
"One would wonder about their motivations for being here for so long, if that was the case..."

"...perhaps they enjoyed their work? There are good masters and bad, I suppose..."

His expression softened.
"I hope it's why they stay. I'd hate to think that they are miserable."
