Alex laughed a little, not sure if Rosalind had deliberately misunderstood her use of the word "lot" but enjoying it just the same. And she smiled eagerly and rose at her unspoken question. "I do hope we'll be friends," she agreed. "I would be remiss indeed to let anyone so charming strike out entirely on her own, if she needs my help. And I shall strive for what gravity I possess, though it may not be much."
She held out her hand.
"You may call on me at any time; here, or [at this address]. I hope you will."

Rosalind was charmingly oblivious to the fact that her punning - she made a lot of puns - could be taken for naive misunderstanding. She expected that in time her wit would win out and be obvious.
Rosalind took Alex's hand. She had a boyishly excited handshake, but there was a girlish giddiness in it. She was excited, like a small young girl might be excited, to have found a friend, to share secrets with her. She felt she was rather in love with the idea already.
"I hope, then, that I become confused very soon," she said, with a quirk of a smile. "Or perhaps I will merely pretend one of me is, so you can come to his aid."
She winked, but there was a delay in her releasing Alex's hand.

Alex winked and squeezed her hand lightly, introducing her own delay in letting go. "You needn't wait to be confused," she said. "I am not one to stand on ceremony, as I hope is apparent. But either of you which appears will be welcome."
She was feeling her own excitement, something like Rosalind's but tempered by her greater experience and her lesser introspection. Alex had many friends, but it seemed to her--if she'd thought about it--that they interacted with her on a different level from the one Rosalind seemed to be on. People did not normally come to her for advice, and she had yet to meet someone which precisely the things in common they had.

At this point holding onto Alex's hand was superfluous, but she felt saddened that she had to let go. It was shyness that did it, and she withdrew it with an almost nervous smile, although at the same time she did continue to feel excited. Nonetheless, she had a lot to think about and wanted to hold off on it for the time being. Still, the next time...
"Thanks so many times over," she said, excusing herself and exiting the box rather quickly in her nervous excitement (as well as with the idea that she didn't quite feel comfortable loitering around a grand place like the Opera house, public or not). After leaving, though, she glanced back very wonderingly, and continued to do so as she left.

Alex grinned to herself in the privacy of the box and shoved her hands into her pockets, slouching naturally as she departed--at a much slower pace than Rosalind. Interesting. She loved meeting new people, and Rosalind seemed so fresh and exciting to her she might have been surprised to learn how very much she herself had stirred the other girl.
But she seldom thought deeply on these things, and she whistled to herself as she walked home, wondering what the girl must be saying to herself now...
