Desire tapped away cigarette ash that dropped off into nothing, eyes fixing on Mortimer, piecing together what little bit of history it could assume. A misplaced lesser god, good-natured, with commonplace amnesia, taken in by this Erik and his...offspring. Well, it wouldn't be the first time. Although the adopted parent would have to be something particularly intriguing, if it could overlook Mortimer's little oddities, of which there were many. Certainly he would be an adoring child, but that was not usually enough for most. Desire knew that better than anybody.
"Desire," it replied quite smoothly; then its smile widened, showing teeth, and it glanced away momentarily, almost sweetly. "But I am not a Monsieur. I am neither here nor there, but...everywhere." A little ringing laughter. "So to speak."

"Oh." He said and blushed a bit, once again the dress of humans fooling him. "Am sorry, Madame...Hm, cannot see well?" was the excuse he'd been using of late.
When the food came, he gave a little trill, sniffing at the plate and picking up the chopsticks expertly, digging in and giving low quick clicks of pleasure.

Desire took note of use of utensils with a flash of the eyes. So was this something he had learned, or something he had remembered? What some of them lost in memory others kept for ages. He might have very well been one of those who seemed like an ignorant little savage except for a certain amount of genius with strange things.
Desire itself took up the chopsticks with practiced ease and began to eat, although with more propriety and table manners than were really necessary. Desire very much liked food, of course, as Desire very much liked anything that could be wanted, but its mind was elsewhere tonight, although the meal was more than satisfactorily prepared. It made a point of regarding Mortimer and asking, "Do you like it?"

The little man purred and nodded, swallowing a mouthful of noodles and some meat he didn't know.
"Yes! Very very very good!" He grinned, showing off his broad triangular teeth, and decided that he should try a new people-food every day--even if apples were still the best things ever.
"Thank you, Madame!"

Teeth aside, he seemed a charming fellow, and charm being one of the few things that could temper Desire's tendency to bore quickly, this bode well for him. It continued to eat, appreciating the meal itself and planning on ordering a wine afterwards to finish. Briefly considering whether or not Mortimer would like wine, it decided that it did not immediately matter and did not include those considerations in the planning.
It smiled instead, its own teeth small and well-fitted to each other. "Not a Madame, either, I am afraid. Though either will do."

The little man tilted his head, slurping down and swallowing a few stray noodles.
"Not man, woman?" This confused him for a moment, then made him smile.
"Am also not man, woman"

Desire smiled. This was not peculiar enough to be alarming, but it had not expected it. Mortimer looked male enough to at least be a monsieur.
"How very fortunate for you," said Desire, sliding over its own plate of pork rolls to offer one. "The limits of either shell can bore one if one lives long enough."

Of course, Mortimer had only chosen his shape based on what he knew, and he had never seen a woman in anything but piles of billowy cloth, whereas he had seen Henry, Erik and Julian all nude or nearly so, and presently loved Erik and Julian best and had modeled his personhood after their general shapes.
"Limits?" He wasn't really aware of much difference between the genders, and certainly didn't know that one shape could do anything the other could not.

Desire lay down the chopsticks and folded its hands almost in Christian prayer, resting a cheek against its knuckles, elbows on the tabletop, looking at Mortimer contemplatively.
"Doesn't know about limits? Poor little dear." But it wasn't mocking, not that Desire couldn't be mocking. It was somewhat endearing to watch his face change with each thought Desire let drop. He had such an expressive manner. "I am sure you are far from discovering them."

"Why?" He tilted his head and took another bite of food before returning his full attention to his benefactor.
"Because am ugly monster? Yes? Not really a person."

This answer rather knocked Desire off balance. It had not meant to imply anything that Mortimer would understand, as it had gotten the impression that Mortimer did not know much of desire and certainly little of the limits of his body. That this was not the case was evidenced by the response, which, despite the adorable baby-talk nature of it, showed a firmer grasp than Desire had recognized.
Desire was not pouting, but someone else - like certain members of Desire's family, for example - might have thought it was. "Well. That is not what I meant." It took a thoughtful bite and swallowed to give itself time to prepare a suitable response. Desire was ever-adaptive, but disliked needing to rethink its own constructs. "You are hardly at all an ugly monster," and were you, it would make little difference, as goodness knows how many find that appealing. "You're simply...unlikely to engage in the sorts of human activities that make you consider your shape ill-suited to the environment." And then again, maybe you aren't. But I'll find out, now, won't I?
Desire smiled. "Mortimer is very pretty, you know. There are many who would think."

The little creature blushed a bit and took another bite.
"But is not Mortimer's real shape." Well, he had no idea what his real shape was, but his more recent shark-like form was not chosen, it had merely happened, and so he supposed he considered that, presently, most natural for him.
"Why? Like f' do all things people do."

The last sentence made Desire frown. Desire understood all languages man could invent, but could not necessarily understand them when they were spoken incorrectly. It took a moment before it could sort out what Mortimer had meant by it, and Desire had the slightly undesirable insight that it was trying to teach Mortimer something. Desire was not unwilling to lesson others, but did not fancy itself a schoolmaster in any sense.
"People don't always do nice things," said Desire smoothly, with an elegant hand gesture meant to sum things up. "In fact, sometimes they do very cruel ones. We wouldn't you to suffer their caprices."

The creature gave a low growl at being talked down to.
"Know that. Answer question. Why f' think Shark will not "engage in activities"?"

Desire should have been taken aback by the sudden display of ferocity, but its primary feeling was a cold dislike of its treatment. It narrowed its eyes, but answered.
"Because you are not a person, and regardless of how well you may imitate one this does not mean you will feel all of the things a person feels," said Desire, setting down the chopsticks very sharply. "Nor can I imagine you want to." Desire might have governed human feelings - as ungovernable as the emotion desire was - but it took an attitude more of amusement than respect towards them.
