He shook his head.
"I don't think so. Marianne...she doesn't see, but I think she senses...she's all I thought of, all this time."

"And..." *she hesitated, pale pink staining her cheeks. She leaned closer to the fire to excuse it.* "What about your son?"

His gaze turned distant.
"Olivier...I don't know him well." He said sadly. "All I recall is a baby in Marianne's arms."

"He's still your son. Had I any family, I should cling to them."

He was wringing his hands now.
"I hope...I hope he's all right. Not touched by madness..."

"He seems to be alright...he has had much to do--to be master of the house at such a young age..."

His sad expression shifted a bit, and he smiled wistfully.
"It fell to me, when I was very young. I did fine, I think. Perhaps he'll take after me."

"Perhaps," *said Carolina, turning to get more coal.*

He wavered a bit, his image becoming less distinct.
"Oh...I must go now. Say hello to them for me, won't you? And be careful. There's...there's someone in the house that leaves a bad feeling in the air."

*Carolina frowned as he began to disappear--it was certainly unsettling to watch.*
"...yes, sir," *she said, bobbing a curtsey as he faded entirely from view.*

Heaving a sigh, he hesitated a moment before leaving the kitchen. It had been so long since he'd had any interaction, it had been nice to simply talk.

***AFTER THE INCIDENT IN THE LITTLE ROOM***
*Caro soon returned, her face white, with angry red marks on her face where she'd dug her nails, but they would fade within a day or two. No one spoke for a moment as she returned to her work. Then, she turned to the cook.*
"Please...I...I would like to be assigned elsewhere...I can't lay the fires in the family rooms... Please. I can't be alone--"
*The cook nodded brusquely.* "Of course, lamb." *The usually harsh but fair woman knew well enough the position Carolina had put herself in by being so bold. It was only a matter of time, now, and it could only get worse, and there was little any of them could do but try to buy the poor girl time.*
"...has there been any news of Georgette?" *piped up one of the other maids, who was quickly hushed by another. The cook glanced at Caro, who looked away, knowing full well the portent and truth of what she said next, though none of them could avoid knowing even if they wished to.*
"Dead these two weeks in childbirth, and the baby as well."
*Carolina grit her teeth and got on with her work, her hands knowing it by rote as she was suddenly blinded by terror. Georgette had been an upper housemaid, waiting upon the family in the dining room. It was not even a year past since she had first been summoned to serve M. Laurent a cognac in his private study.*

*Soon Olivier made his way down into the kitchen, knowing that someone or other was owed an apology. He hadn't managed to work out who it was yet, but he hoped the cook would tell him so that he could make it right.*
"Pardon the interruption, Cook, but I need to speak with you for a moment... I understand there was a bit of an, er, disturbance with Laurent earlier this evening?"

"...nothing that wasn't handled, monsieur," *said the cook quickly.* "It has been a trying evening in more ways than one."

"Please, if my ... uncle has distressed someone, I'd like the chance to at least apologize on his behalf. His behavior was doubtless unacceptable."
