"And Belle?"

*His expression softened*
"Her--and you--are my real motivations in this world. You both are what keeps me from becoming simply a ghost haunting a dark castle."

"Maybe you shouldn't have put it together again," Herbert sighed. "Maybe the collapse was a sign-"

"But...I like this castle..." He said, sounding as close as he'd ever come to a pout.

"Well, yes-"

"Besides," he said, tone returning to merely good spirited. "Can you really see me living somewhere else?"

"Perish the thought," Herbert snorted. "Though I'll confess, I never would have thought even a few years that I could have lived anywhere else either. Do you know that I actually work now? It's so deliciously petty bourgeois. I mostly tell people to go away, but Zira does that too. He helped me with my hair- do you like it? Zira says it's much more becoming this way. I suppose it's an excellent result considering I did it in a fit- I'm probably lucky to have any hair, really, after cutting it in a fit. But now I'm babbling. Carry on."

Krolock chuckled.
“You’re not babbling, my dear boy. It’s good to see you full of so much enthusiasm. I am proud of you, you know, even if it doesn’t always seem that way.”

"I haven't done anything to be proud of!"

"No? Not even that you've finally gone on your own and made it, that you are being responsible, and then there's that revolution..."

"No one told you what really happened there?" Herbert asked uncomfortably, taking a step away. "I... if you've got an image of me as some kind of hero, Vater, you're- that's not what happened."

"You stood atop the barricade with the banner in your hand." He said gently.
"You stared down an army."

"Only after I spent the rest of the time trying to hide, hoping I'd be sent home," he admitted.

"Indeed. But you conquered your fear. You didn't stay in hiding the entire time...you could have...you could have also done what I've seen before, run from it all...but you stayed."
*He turned so that he was fully facing Herbert*
"In the end, you still showed bravery."

There was very little Herbert could say to that. But for the first time in his existance, he seemed uneasy being praised.
