"Gods, Johanna...I can't just forget about this."
*He closed his eyes, heaving a sigh*
"If you insist. You can be just as stubborn as your mother."
*He opened his eyes, giving her a stern look*
"But if he tries something like that again, then I won't be held back. Not by anything."

*She nodded, her eyes doing all the talking of her thanks that was needed.*
*But she spoke them anyway.*
"Thank you, Papa."
*And with that she rested her head on his chest as she had always done as a little girl.*

*He hugged her, trying to be as comforting as he could*
"My poor Johanna..."

*She pulled back after a while.*
"If you don't mind... I'd like to tell Mama myself."

"Probably best you did...I'd upset her more than someone else would."

*She gave a sad little smile before moving to leave and tell Aimee.*

*He stood staring at the open door a moment, his expression troubled. He hated the situations that society threw his family into--the restrictions of their position always seemed to be at war with the more easy way of thinking of the Pontmercys.
Finally, he closed the door and quietly went back to the ledgers, distracted now by the recent conversation*

*Some time, though not long later, Robbie knocked softly at the master's study door. He had slipped away from his work, and not requested the audience he was about to enforce upon his employer--he figured he was as good as sacked once the truth was out, anyway.*

*Marius' somewhat muffled voice came through the door*
"Come in."

*Robbie stepped inside, shutting the door, and remained at a respectful difference. He cleared his throat and plunged ahead, knowing he should wait to be invited to speak but fearing his resolve would crumble if he hesitated.*
"Sir, a--about the man in the stables...sir--i--it was me that fought 'im. I--I thought ye should know...if ye want t'call the constable, I'll understand. As it is, I c'n leave my position this moment, if ye wish, an' I won't ask fer no wages 'r nothin'...I know I did wrong an' fergot my place, sir."

*He'd been about to say something when Robbie plunged ahead with his speech, and listened calmly as the boy filled in the missing pieces about what had happened that night. He'd had feeling Johanna was hiding something...
He had to hide his smile. Robbie had done what Marius himself likely would have.*
"I appreciate your honesty, and the fact that you came here and told me up front speaks very well of you."
*He leaned back in his chair*
"In fact, I think I should want someone such as yourself to stay working for this house."

*Robbie blinked.*
"...sir...I...I might have killed 'im...if the young miss hadn't stopped me, I..."
*He shook his head.*
"I ought t'be in prison, sir."

*His expression was all seriousness*
"You saved my daughter. That alone is enough to convince me you should stay working here. But it's not the only thing--because what you did is precisely what I would have, in the same position."
*He leaned forward, earnest*
"You deserve an award, not dismissal."

*Robbie's jaw dropped at this unexpected accord of thought and feeling from a man whose station was so far beyond his own. At least it somewhat explained his daughter's maddeningly mixed signals. She came by that honestly, it seemed.*

“I hope you’ll stay with this house. I’d feel better knowing that there’s somebody else around that would protect Johanna.”
He wondered at Johanna’s keeping Robbie’s involvement a secret. It could mean any number of things, really. The girl was Pontmercy, after all.
