Simon, never having had one of those uncles, did not recognize the nature of the man's amusement and so did not think of it as a problem. Had he been the type of boy who was more affectionate, he might have hugged the shadowed man, but instead, he bowed hastily and smiled a bit.
"Thank you, Monsieur. I will not forget this!" said the young man, picking up his case with a newfound energy. Moving around the man to the proper direction, Simon carried on down the corridor, following the man's directions.

Erik giggled as the boy retreated, so completely unaware of what was in store for him.
"Oh, I don't think you will," he murmured.

**AFTER MEETING DESTLER AND CARLOS**
Erik's shadow lurked just far enough away from Destler's home to observe.
"So he did not want you," the voice said suddenly.

Simon nearly jumped out of his skin when he made it back from those men's domain.
"Christ, don't do that!" he sputtered, holding his chest as he caught his breath. "Of course not - and you knew it, didn't you?"

Erik's voice was almost smiling with manic glee.
"Why should they?" he enthused. "But the fat one gave you food; I was not expecting that, no, not at all. Perhaps he likes you."

"Or he does what the rich men do... except instead of a few sous, he gave me chocolate."
Simon sighed once he had gotten his wits about him again. "Either way, I promised them I'd leave. So I'm trying to."

"Chocolate!" Erik crowed. "And you're going away, just like that?"

Simon set his case down and cracked his knuckles, then sat on the edge of the case, balancing rather well for it being on its edge.
"He said they'd prefer it if I did. The thin man slammed the door on me and the fat one... well, that," sighed the youth, still doing his balancing act on the case. "They don't want me, so unless you know a magic trick to change that, I'm...." He put his chin in his hand and his elbow against his knee, now straddling the case. "I don't know..." Simon closed his eyes, trying to not get upset, but it was all very frustrating, and it was getting harder to keep himself from crying.
He was supposed to be a man, but...

Erik peered at the boy.
"Do you have any reason to believe one of them is the man you seek?"

Simon blinked and shook himself, having nearly dozed off in that position, still astride his case.
He thought about the question a moment, then shrugged. "Have you ever had something in your head telling you things? Like a conscience, but not just telling you to be good?"

"You have a voice in your head telling you to be good?" Erik asked, totally missing the point. He shook his head. "Do you mean to say you still have this feeling that you're correct? And what of the men you met--would you be satisfied, knowing either was your father?"

Simon missed what Erik meant about having a conscience, but he nodded to start answering the man's question.
"Yes, something like that. I don't know if I'd be quite satisfied, but I would like to know who he is, if he's really what mum said he was, or if she had just been making things up when..." Simon stopped himself and ugn his head. Talking about that with strangers was more painful than admitting she was a whore.
