Kiba had been wandering around for a day or two in the somewhat-forested area; he was glad to finally get out of that damn building, even if there were still humans living nearby.
There were mice and rabbits here and there, but it was late and Kiba didn't feel up to hunting right now. At least it was a clear night--he could already feel his energy coming back as the half-moon's light illuminated his fur.
He yawned and stretched out a few yards away from the building--only because there were no trees to block the moonlight. He definitely wasn't lonely; just bored and tired, and perfectly relieved to be outside. He'd been alone for much of his adult life, and just because he was in an entirely different world did not mean he missed anyone but Cheza.
He wasn't lonely. Really.
Are there pups inside? He wondered as the scents of two canines caught his attention. ...Dogs. Never mind, he finished after another sniff.
But against better reason, he got up and headed closer to the building, foregoing his human illusion so that whoever saw him wouldn't come too close.

Inside, Sirius cocked his head. Another scent, something unfamiliar and unplaceable but also something familiar. In the sense that he knew it should mean something to him. But he was so young, and so much of the world still confused him.
He trotted unsteadily over to a door, pawing at it until it swung open. It fell back, hitting him across the floor, but he tried again, getting through the third time and finding himself outside.

((If Kiba wasn't grouchy, masculine, and tired, he'd totally be squeeing right now.
As for me: OMG PUPPY!!!11@!!))
Kiba's only reaction to the pup's sudden appearance was a twitch. He was rather uncertain on actually meeting it; he'd been that young once, but he had only a vague idea on how to act around them as an adult wolf. The most he knew was that pups at this age could hardly distinguish between their usual caretakers and strangers who were possible threats.
What are you doing by yourself? he asked, giving the pup an inquisitive nudge. There's nobody to get you out of trouble if you start wandering too far away.
No, Kiba did not have a soft spot for puppies--he just needed to get this one back inside before it wandered off and got hurt. As a clear-thinking and non-human adult, it was his (temporary) responsibility.
Come on, let's get you back to your den. He pushed the door open and looked back to make sure the pup followed him back inside. Do you even know where it is?

This one was was talking to him.
Sirius could not remember being talked to by another dog-person before. But the words made strange sort of sense, even if he couldn't parse them individually. It was hardly his fault he was outside--he'd smelled something strange! And it was strange, indeed--white like him, with four feet and a tail but BIG, bigger than his people even. And there was something about it, some sort of force that he felt a little bit with the girl-person whose bed he'd appeared in but was much stronger now.
Sirius gave a little satisfied yelp and flopped over on his back, waving his overlarge feet in the air.

Kiba gave a slightly confused whuff as the pup, rather than following him into the building, rolled happily onto his back and waved his paws around.
He probably should have known better than to expect such a young pup as capable of thought besides food, company, and sleep, but at least it seemed to recognize him as an alpha. As it was, carrying him back to his proper place was probably a more suitable option than having to watch his every move.
All right, hold still. I'm going to pick you up. Kiba nudged the pup to get him back onto his feet.

Sirius flailed floppily for a moment before his wrigglings and Kiba's nose brought him back upright, not at all expecting what came next.

Now that Sirius was standing and reasonably still, Kiba lowered his head over his midriff and carefully picked him up, using just enough pressure to keep the pup from slipping out.
Let me know if it feels too tight, he said. With that, he pushed the door open again and walked inside.
Along with tracing Sirius' scent through the building, he noticed that while at least several humans lived here, they were either absent altogether or in different rooms--and certainly not close enough to realize a wolf had gotten in with no problem.
He didn't even have to break down the door, to say nothing of the pup getting out in the first place! What kind of human would leave the most prominent entrance unsecured when the building was surrounded by a damn forest?
This place obviously needed an alpha--or at least one who knew what he was doing.

It wasn't too tight, but Sirius wasn't too sure about this new arrangement. Still, he'd only been going outside to see the new dog, so he supposed everything was as it should be.
Dog! Sirius said triumphantly.

One would think that Kiba had a problem with being called a dog, but he actually didn't mind the pup's misnomer for him--in his world, humans believed wolves had been extinct for two centuries, and it seemed that wolves were at least very rare in this one as well.
Besides, pups at this age tended to lump everything in with their own species--Kiba himself had faint memories of mistaking horses for strangely-scented, herbivorous wolves when he'd been taken in by the shaman.
Wolf, he corrected. Not a dog.

Sirius was barely at the point of forming words, let alone sentences, taken so young as he was. Everything was a jumble of feelings and senses. So it was with pride that he said anything at all. Kiba's presence was, if nothing else, good for him in this regard.
What is wolf? he queried.

How to explain it in a way the pup could understand? Kiba wondered, turning as the scent trail shifted. He hadn't given much thought to it before--usually others understood exactly what it meant when he said he was a wolf, but the meaning of "angry canine capable of killing you" certainly didn't apply to this. (Although some kinds of dogs were far bigger than wolves, the only dogs able to match them in strength were the ones bred specifically to hunt wolves.)
Wolves have been around for a long time, he answered. We were here before the first dogs were born.

The words were more or less meaningless, but Sirius picked up the sense of them. "Old dog" was more or less what he got, and not just in the sense that Kiba himself was older than Sirius. The idea sent a hint of recognition wafting through his brain, but it was merely a glimmer of something he was supposed to know. This was happening regularly, but no answers had been forthcoming.
His puppy mind wandered off the topic at hand, having satisfied itself about the wolf/dog question.
Where? he queried, meaning their current destination.

Since Sirius was only capable of thinking in concepts, Kiba was hard-pressed to keep things understandable for him; in his world there had been a steady decrease of pups due to the temperatures and food sources dropping, and the intense wolf-hunting had made raising them in one area too risky.
To a safer place, he answered, settling on shorter sentences as they were easier for Sirius to remember.
The scent ended near a door, where the other pup's scent was strong as well--this must be their den. Kiba nudged it to make sure it was open, then went inside.
Here we are, he remarked as he set Sirius down on the floor. A glance around revealed, to his annoyance, that the other pup was missing. Where's the other one?

((I'm going to assume sue!Kris has kept them in her room for the time being, as they're so small. I can do that, because I'm her.))
Sirius remembered the other one, the memory of Fenris' pointed face--more like Kiba than Sirius was, though Kiba and Sirius were closer in color--flashing in his mind's eye.
Food place.
That was where he'd left him, trying to open a box.

Kris opened the door with laundry in her arms, explaining her absence. She was helping to run the inn, considering Brandi's numerous duties, and was in and out all the time.
"Oh," she said, seeing the large wolf and the unharmed puppy, who did not look concerned for his safety. Despite her initial jolt of fear--for Sirius--she recognized that if the wolf meant him harm Sirius would have encountered it by now.
Still, there was a huge wolf in her room, which was not expected.
"Hi there," she said. She stood still, deferring direct eye contact until she understood the situation, and dropped the clothes so her hands were free.
