*Again, his family had disappeared and Nicki was the one required to make social appearances and field the barrage of 'eligible young ladies' thrown at him. He had just managed to escort out a certain dowager and her ward, who had an excessively red mouth and cheeks to go with it, and who had , he was quite sure, dampened her skirts so as to make them stick to her legs (which did not need defining, in his opinion).
He knew she'd done so because she'd left a wet spot on the sofa with said dampened skirts.
So he was now in the drawing room, trying to concentrate on his book and failing quite miserably.*

It was a fascinating house that was sure. Stunning, elegant, and completely terrifying. ‘What am I doing here,’ Iris asked herself.
‘You know exactly what you’re doing. You’re going to go inside and tell Nicolas off for kissing you. If a conversation manages to form from that, so be it.’

*The butler, a stately man who was a tad snobbish-looking, answered.*
"Can I help you, Mademoiselle?"

Iris stuck out her hand, which held a very crumpled calling card.
((Alliteration not intended.))

*He opened the door.*
"Do come in." *And he managed to sound utterly unwelcoming. He led her outside the drawing room door, and then opened it, stepped in, and announced her.*
"A Miss Iris Fisher here to see you, sir." *He informed Nicolas.*
*Nicki stood.* "Oh, do show her in!" *He said brightly, his face breaking into a smile as the butler did so.*
"I was beginning to think you wouldn't come at all." *He told her, still beaming, once the butler had left.*

“I had Meg read the card and give me the directions, but I still managed to get hopelessly lost the first two days I tried to find your house.”

"Couldn't you have just looked at the card?" *He asked, looking at her curiously.* "Oh, do sit down." *He gestured to a chair, manner-bound not to sit until she did.*

“Thank you,” Iris sat down obligingly and adjusted her skirt.
“I did look at the card. It didn’t help me in the slightest.”

It also dawned on Iris’ face.
“Oh, you thought I could read, didn’t you?”

"I only assumed... I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to put you in a position where you were uncomfortable." *He said, trying to think of a way to make the conversation slightly less awkward.*

“Why are you apologizing? I just find it funny you thought someone would have taught the likes of me how to read,” Iris didn’t realize she was not helping to make the conversation more comfortable.
