*Somewhere in the city, far from her family's home, Johanna was reading. In front of a small church, in a crowded neighborhood, on a tiny square, on a wooden bench, she sat reading.*

Christian poked his head from around the corner of a brick wall. Straightening himself, he sat on the bench as casually as he could manage.
"Hello, mademoiselle," he greeted, crossing his legs.

*She tensed a little, startled, and closed the book.*
"Er... good afternoon?" Do I know you?

"Yes... good afternoon."
God, that was a bit abrupt, he rebuked himself. Let's try this again.
"What book is that you're reading, mademoiselle?"

"It's a travel book." *She said, a little slowly, still bewildered and a little confused.* "About Japan."

"Japan?" Christian repeated with a slight nod of his head.
"I've never been there. Have you?"

*She shook her head, still looking a little like a deer in the headlights.* "I cannot say I've had the pleasure."

Christian bent to look into her eyes, at long last realizing the reaction he'd set off.
"I apologize. I seem to have startled you."

*She gave a small, bashful smile and flushed a tinge, one because he'd called her out and two because he was staring so intently at her. She cast her eyes down in embarassment.*
"A little."

"Oh, I'm terribly sorry. And now look, I've gone and further mortified you," he sighed. "How about a more proper introduction, then? I'm Christian."
He extended a hand.

*She smiled a little more, or at least less as if she was nervous and more as if he'd made her do so, and placed a small, white hand in his.*
"Johanna."
*Oh, it felt so delightfully scandalous to be conversing with a strange man on a bench, asking him to refer to her by her first name. She wondered vaguely if there would be rumors, but decided it was impossible as she was far enough away from any 'respectable' part of the city that nobody could be here--which is exactly why she'd come.*

"Mademoiselle Johanna," Christian tried out on his tongue.
He brought her hand to his lips and placed a soft kiss on it.
"Pleasure to meet you."

*Well that made her turn pink again.*
"A pleasure to meet you as well, Monsieur Christian." *Despite her native French, when she said his name (which was clearly English) it was with little-to-no trace of an accent--giving the sentence a strange change from the flowing French rhythm to the more abrupt English.*

Christian narrowed his eyes, marking her apparent mastery of the two languages.
"You wouldn't happen to be from England? Because I'm from there."

*She shook her head.*
"Non, but my grandfather was American, and my mother was raised in a multilingual household--convinced of the benefits, she raised us all speaking French and English."
