"Oh." Well, it was probably all right, then. Likely she had not wanted to witness the fight, and all would be well shortly. "At least Erik still has his family."
He turned, cupping Julian's chin in his hand to examine his son's face.
"I know what we will do," he announced softly, with an intensity reserved for cunning plans. "You, my love, are going on the stage. You will take Erik's rightful place and sing his glory to Man and the Heavens. And behind you, my beautiful boy, there will always be Erik. They will no longer be able to deny my power."

((Poor Pina.))
*There was a warm pride that filled Julian at Erik's words. His trust...his confidence...was intoxicating. He would see that it was well placed.*
"It will be my honor to do this for you."
*His eyes filled with thought.*
"How should we start about such things?"

Erik's eyes gazed into the distant future.
"We must find the appropriate vehicle, of course," he said. "And then I will command the Opera to hire you--there cannot be any argument, especially once they hear you."

"What is the next piece the Opera intends to host?" *Julian queried. For in truth he had been so busy with Erik's return and Mortimer and Grantaire's mechanical body and Destler's new mask that the Opera had been pushed aside from his thoughts.*

Erik frowned.
"I do not know," he said. "It is time I became reacquainted with my Opera. I have been too long buried in my own concerns."

*Julian nodded, daring to stand and offering a hand to Erik with a supportive gaze.*
((How do you want to swing this?))

Erik took Julian's hand, though he felt strong enough not to need it.
"I am going out," he said, drawing on his shirt. "It is time to resume my activities; the Opera has been too long without its Ghost."
His cloak whirled around his shoulders and he fastened it deftly in place. But before he left, he cupped the back of Julian's head with his hand and delivered a possessive kiss.
"Look to your sister," he said softly. "I will return shortly."

"As you wish." *Julian breathed, as if exhaling a bit of the soul that had been exchanged when Erik kissed him. He bowed his head and slipped out of the room and down the hall to Pina's room.*

**AFTER FAUST IS CAST**
"What is 'double casting'?" Erik railed. "Christine will not share Marguerite! It is an outrage!"

*Julian frowned at his mother's displeasure.*
"Surely something will convince the managers that they were mistaken and that she can handle the role on her own."

"Well, of course," Erik said, slightly mollified. "But I cannot imagine what came into their heads in the first place!"

*Julian gave a dismissive gesture, his bony fingers moving fluidly.*
"They probably assume that the Opera is still about politics. That the society of man still dominates here." *He frowned and shook his head slowly.*

"Well," Erik said. "There is little we can do about that, altogether, until the Opera procures a decent tenor."
It pained him, to think about Christian and the triumph that might have been his, but the boy had made his choice! Erik could not be responsible for everything.
"Still. You must be ready. Have you learned Mephisto yet?"

*Julian nodded slowly.*
"I have. If you wish to evaluate my progress, it can be arranged."

"It is always a pleasure to hear you, my boy," Erik said. "Though your talents are wasted on it. I shall make it up to you, however."
Julian had stayed. Julian would always stay. And Erik would focus on him, because there was nothing else left. Because his family had failed him.
He blinked, looking around. "Where are my papers?" he asked. "Where are the things I have been working on?"
