Shortly after Anne's arrival, a letter arrived for her addressed in an unfamiliar hand, postmarked in London.
Dear Miss Shirley,
It has come to my attention that a woman very close to you, Marilla Cuthbert, has recently fallen prey to one of the worst indignities of old age. You may not know that I am an expert in her particular condition, and that while my techniques have been proven beneficial, I myself constantly benefit from the opportunity to treat those afflicted.
Let me be plain.
I am a surgeon, specializing in repairing eyesight. The procedure is risky, though not inordinately so, and with this letter you will find testimonials to that effect. I should like to treat Ms. Cuthbert, if she is willing to undergo the procedure, but on one condition; she must come to London to have it done in my surgery. The technology is so advanced that it cannot yet be made mobile, and therefore it is unavailable in North America.
I hope you will consider my offer, and at the very least come with Ms. Cuthbert to meet me and discuss the possibilities. I have every faith in my ability to help her, and I hope to see you shortly. I hope you do not find this letter too presumptuous, but I am a man of science and a medical man in addition, and such cases as Ms. Cuthbert's can not only lead to many years of prolonged enjoyment of life, but add to our body of knowledge regarding how to save others.
Thank you for your time.
Dr. Michael Hartley
Tucked within the envelope, along with testimonials from those who had undergone the operation, were two boat tickets to London.
