*Gawain turned back to her, his eyes intense.*
"Like you?"
*He arched his brow.*
"Stand there and tell me of the boons of love, Mother. Tell me that it is worth defying our calling. That you are happy. That you love your life, married to a cursed beast, my own father conspiring with your Hellion mother. Tell me it's worth it. Tell me what it is like, this being in love, that I should sacrifice my calling for it."

*Malefica looked back at him, her own eyes mild and filled with sadness. For him. Not for herself.*
"Yes, I love my life. Have it ever occurred to you that also cursed beasts need to feel loved? Even my Hellion mother, as you call her. And your father always hated me for my goodness. I hope he will be happier with her."
*She sighed and replied.*
"There are four questions of value in life... What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love. The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return! Do you not know that a Guardian has to feel love and compassion for even the smallest creature, no matter how evil it is? Your superiors, have they taught you nothing?"
*She sat down beside him and took his hand in hers, motherly.*
"My son. You want to give up love for serving the Grail. But you must remember that the Grail itself is a gift of love."

"No, Mother." *Gawain shook his head slowly.*
"How could I not be instilled with your devoted nature towards love? I understand it, all too well. The Grail is love. So you have told me. And so I devote my life to it. I have become the Guardian I was bred to be. Why do I need a family to complete my life? Did you ever consider that perhaps that which you claim has made you happy, might not do the same for me?"
*He smiled gently, support in his eyes.*
"You tell me you are happy, but I cannot believe that. Not when I touch you, when I feel your suffering. It reads in you face, in your voice. You make the most of what you can, but I cannot believe that what you have is true happiness."

*Malefica smiled and looked warmly back at him*
"Love is the greatest feeling you will ever have, yet it is also one of the greatest sorrows. There is so much suffering, but then there are times when the crying, pain, and heartache is worth it. Those moments are perfect, they are right. Those moments make all the suffering worth while. It's those moments we should live for."

*Gawain grew silent, watching her. Finally, in a low voice, he asked gently.*
"If I tell you that I love Nightfall, will you let this issue rest?"
*There was no malice, only a tired honesty in his voice.*

*Malefica looked back at her son, with warmth in her eyes.*
"Do you tell me that because you love her, or to let this issue rest?"
*She smiled genuinely and looked back at him, there was no malice in her voice either.*
"I am not asking these questions to bother you, my son. I am merely worried that Nightfall may die from unrequitted love. Remember she is a part elf."

*Gawain frowned.*
"Elves are immortal, Mother." *He answered simply.*

*Malefica smiled.*
"If they choose to stick to their own kind, live as true elves, and never have anything to do with other creatures, yes."
*She stretched.*
"Nightfall however, is in deep trouble. She chose to fall in love with a man who is not an elf. And now she is facing the threat of losing her immortality because of her love for a certan Guardian. The Highest council of elves are furious. But Nightfall has adamantly refused to give you up. She told them she'd rather spend a lifetime with you, than an eternity alone."

((She told them that today? Like...before she left on the Second Expedition?))
*Gawain frowned.*
"So I must love her, or she will die."
*He walked towards the window, looking out it into the garden.*
"Her life is now my responsibility."
*He sighed.*

((Nightfall told the highest council that after she left Mondego, but before going to the Second Expedition, which you remember started from Lorien.))
*Malefica looked back at him.*
"Gawain, her life is not your responsibility. You are free to choose whom you like. You didn't promise her anything, did you?"
*She smiled gently.*
"Nightfall will not like to force you into things. She is proud of her ability to take responsibility for her own actions, no matter what they may lead to."

((But she just fell in love with him seeing him at breakfast, which in character was this morning. That's all I'm asking. When was she at Mondego's Mansion?))
*Gawain shook his head, his eyes intense on the garden.*
"If I am to show compassion to all creatures, how can I be expected to let her die of love for me?"

((Sorry, I mixed up the names. I meant the fortress, not Mondego Mansion. She fell in love, went home, told the council, and left them in a rage, while she went off on the Expedition.))
*Malefica smiled warmly.*
"Nobody can expect that from you, my son. But it is your own feelings that count. You must think over what you feel for her in your heart. And then let her know your feelings."

((Busy day.))
*Gawain turned back to face his mother, his eyes dark.*
"I have told you already. I will tell her. But she has gone to help her people. Would you have me abandon my post to go after her?"

((Yeah, and much distraction from my family while I'm typing this. Sorry )) *Malefica smiled and looked back at him.* "I know you will tell her, my son. You can't go after her where she is now, because she is in The Land of Shadows. But if you want to follow her steps without leaving your post, I have a gift for you." *She handed him a hand-held mirror. It was small, with oval shape, and the frame and shaft was of pure silver with a beautiful pattern.* "When you think of the one you want to see and hold on to this mirror, you can see them and the things that surrounds them. Then you will always know whether or not they are in danger and need your help."

*Gawain took the mirror cautiously.*
"What good does it do me to know she is in danger if I cannot get to her to help?"
