*Kip had a pained look on his face for a moment before he turned and left the kitchen, going back into the yard, into the out house and slamming the door behind him. Not the most graceful of exits, but come on. The boy was eighteen.*

*Lizzie shook against him, grateful for his strength but completely unable to express anything but terrible sobs of misery, her face swelling red and eyes pressed shut. She couldn't bear it. Not without him. Not without getting to say goodbye.*

*Jake closed his eyes.*
"I know, Liz. I know," *he whispered.*
This is all my fault. She should have been there with him. She deserved that chance.

*Finally, Lizzie had nothing left to cry out. Heaving, she pushed away from Jake enough to look up at him.*
"What do we do now?" *She stuttered.*
*It was strange how fast life turned upside down.*

*Jake shook his head.*
"There's nothin'...I mean..."
*He glanced at Jamie, then back at Liz.*
"You c'n go home, if you want. You should. You can."
Whereas I'm stuck here for the rest of my goddamn life.

"Jake?" *Lizzie's frown took on a edge of confusion. It wasn't as if she could just...go. He needed her, now more than ever. And...well...Alex was here. Lizzie felt like a traitor just for the thought and quickly shoved it back, refusing it time at the moment. She shook her head gently.*
"Nah, Jake. I ain't gonna just leave 'ya here all by yerself."
Besides, what is there to go back to?

"Don't you worry 'bout me...I c'n look after myself. Don't you think about me."

*Lizzie set her jaw.*
"Com'on now, Jake. We all need each other right now. Won't do no good to have 'ya here all on yer own."
*The look of resolve was familiar and it was clear that her mind was set.*

"Well, what about Justus? He 'n Ma're back there all alone, an--"
"Justus ain't alone, Jake," *said Jamie quietly of the second-oldest brother.* "He up n' married Eleanor Faye, an' she was six months gone with a young 'un when we left. The ranch is prosperin', an' Ma was happy...happy 'nuff. She knew why we were goin'."

"See?" *Lizzie questioned, as if she'd known all along.*
"We just wanna help. Why 'ya so determined that 'ya gotta suffer all alone?"
*Her eyes were sympathetic.*

"Aw, com'on..."
*Lizzie rolled her eyes.*
"Ya know it's better when we're here. Sure it ain't so hard to admit it."
*Her hands set on her hips firmly.*

"...Jamie's gonna daydream himself into setting the house alight..."
"Oh, so one grassfire an' Imma condemned man?"
"...Kip's locked himself in the outhouse after we've each downed at least three cups of the tobacco juice he calls coffee..."
*Jake glanced up at Liz.*
"And yer more trouble than the rest of 'em put together."

*Lizzie's lips tightened in, then her pink tongue emerged in an act distinctly sisterly. She smacked his shoulder hard.*
"Aw, I see. An' I suppose that you'll take up with yer own cookin' and washin' again then, eh?"

*Jake's jaw went slack and he very nearly whimpered.*
"Christ no," *he muttered.* "I'll have to get married or somethin'."
