"It's not so much speaking as... doing," he said gravely. "It's time to defeat Them, Wild. I would not demand your help. But you are welcome, if you wish it."

*Wild looked up at him, smiling for the first time since the terrible wedding, where her heart and her spirit had been broken. It was a pale smile, but at least it was a smile.*
"You have no idea how much I need to get away right now, Figwit. I have been cooped up in here ever since... you know. I need something to do, so I don't start doing stupid things again. Like drinking or trying to commit suicide."
*She stopped herself from talking and looked down, afraid that Figwit might discover how close she had been to ending her own life.*

Figwit grabbed her shoulders in his hands and searched her lowered face.
"Do not even think such a thing!" he demanded, his voice still soft. "Nothing is worth your life. You should have come to me... Should have... I'm sorry, Wild. Sorry I was not there for you."

*Wild looked up at him. Her beautiful, dark eyes had a very unhappy expression right now, filled with tears that threatened to trickle down her cheeks any moment. She was fighting very hard to hold back the tears. She had not allowed herself to cry at all since the terrible event had happened. She had not allowed herself to talk about it, and tried very hard not to think about it. Because if she did, her heart would shatter into tiny pieces. Her voice was trembling as she tried to reply, and she tried to be braver than she was.*
"D-don't think about it. It doesn't matter anymore. Nothing matters anymore."
*The sound of her voice gave away that not only her heart was broken, but also her spirit.*

"Of course it does. They matter, Wild, and they won't stop and wait for us to be ready. You matter. We'd never have survived without you. This... this will pass. It will hurt, but you will live. And be stronger for it."

*Wild smiled faintly and hugged him again.*
"You're right, Figwit. I'll stop feeling sorry for myself. Thank you for having patience to listen to me. It must have been insufferable. Next time you hear me whining about, just tell me to put a sock in it, okay?"
*She looked up at him again.*
"Have you talked to James - Captain Kirk - yet? I think he would be hurt if he missed the chance to a new adventure."

Figwit was certain he would not tell her that, as he didn't know what "put a sock in it" meant, but he nodded. Then shook his head.
"I haven't," he said. "I thought about leaving him out of this--for his own good--but you're right. He deserves the chance to choose for himself."

((Heee. I should have known Figwit was unfamiliar with Wild's slang terms. XD She learned them when she grew up in the human orphanage.))
*Wild smiled and nodded. It felt better now, that she had someone to talk to. She realized she had cooped up in her treehouse for too long. An expedition would be good for her.*
"I think he will be hurt if he don't get the chance to choose. Even if I doubt he is the kind of man who will hurt easily. But he is a nice guy, and deserves the chance to make his own choice. He was a big help on the first expedition."

Figwit nodded. "Indeed he was. I will ask him, Wild. Thank you. I have told my sister, Nightfall, to meet me at dawn beneath her mother's tree. Can you be ready by then?"

*Wild nodded, with the dignity that was so typical for her. At least after she had grown up.*
"I am glad you will ask him. He is a good friend, and I think he deserves a chance to choose for himself if he wants to go to an expedition or not. I will be ready beneath Leetah's house at dawn."

"Thank you, Wild," Figwit said with a smile. "I will see you then. I'm sorry, about Edward."
He turned to find Kirk and deliver the choice to him.

*Wild looked after Figwit. For the first time after the failed wedding, she was smiling.*
"I am not sorry, Figwit. If I had gone through with it, it would have been the biggest mistake of my life."
*Her eyes were distant, and she smiled, as if she was having a secret.*

He paused for a moment, and nodded. "Then all is as it should be," he said somberly, and melted into the descending night.
