((Oh, this is good.))

"But these have everything to do with my childhood!" he cut in with a sneer.
"You see, Dr. Quinzel, one day, my father wasn't home. That one day, our house was marauded by several men, all of whom came after my poor mother." Here, the Joker paused and licked his lips lasciviously. "I was a good boy. I protected her. But they carved out this smile to teach me a lesson. They handed me a needle and thread to stitch myself back together. My mother, she wouldn't come near me after that."
His eyes held Harleen's gaze with fierce intensity.
"It was so easy to tell that she was frightened. Can you imagine that? Frightened of her own son."

She was still frightened, of course.
And yet in spite of herself, she felt an odd... warmth toward him.
"Oh, you poor thing," she cooed, almost inaudibly.
She noticed the chair that had been set there outside the bars for the first time, and she lowered herself into it without taking her eyes off of him.
"Go on," she said softly, taking down a few notes on what he had just said.

The Joker, in turn, bounded off to his bed and laid himself out.
"She was so terrified of her little boy. Even after what I'd done for her, you know. Then, I thought that maybe make-up would help. Maybe it would disguise what disgusted her so."
He rolled onto his side to peer back at Harleen.
"Nope! It only highlighted the scars on my face. My poor mother. My poor, poor mother."

"Your mother?" she gasped involuntarily. "What about you?"
No wonder the poor thing lost control...
"If it's any consolation... I don't think they're that bad..." Dr Quinzel said weakly.

"My moth--you don't?" he asked, staring at her with what seemed to be amazement.
"They seem to repulse everyone else. I mean, what a face I have, Dr. Quinzel!"

"Well, it's not your fault..."
She smiled a little, trying to be helpful.

"Dr. Quinzel, finally, an individual who understands me!"
The Joker bared his teeth in an attempted heartfelt smile.
"Anyways, enough about me! What about you?" he asked, sitting up.

"Oh- I'm not that interesting," she protested, turning pink.

"I don't buy that, Dr. Quinzel, not for an instant," he said, applying extra emphasis on her surname. "Do you know how I know? Your eyes, they betray you. There's pain and angst branded upon them." He pointed at her.
"Besides, such a pretty face comes with a story. They always do."

"No, it's fine. Just- just your average girl who left home to make something of herself..."

"Never, Dr. Quinzel, never. I suspect you harbor more than what you let on with. There's darkness in us all. Even in you, even in the Batman." The Joker produced his knife from his vest pocket and lovingly burnished it with the sleeve of his flannel shirt. "You'll tell me your story soon enough. No need to fret, darling."
He now admired his distorted reflection on the face of the blade. "Dr. Quinzel, you never told me your name."

"H- Harleen."

"Harleen," the Joker repeated thoughtfully. "Harleen Quinzel."
His eyes flashed suddenly. "Like harlequin, get it? If you shortened your name, it would be Harley Quinn--harlequin!" With a chuckle to himself at his shrewdness, he dropped from the bed to his feet. He had the knife clutched in one hand, and what light managed to penetrate the darkness of his cell refracted off of the silver blade menacingly.

"I think I should take that from you, Mr. Joker," she said firmly, holding out her hand for the knife and struggling to regain at least a semblance of professionalism.
