*Erik blinked.*
"That's true. Because I'm not going to marry you. Christine will come back." *He said this firmly, as if his confidence could make it come about.*

"But the baby, Erik, what about the baby!?"

*Julian had watched this scene in some form of sadistic amusement. As if there could be any love anywhere down here. Well...perhaps...but not at this rate. He scoffed and stepped forward, his voice etched in Erik's mind.*
Oh really...this? A stepmother and a half-sister? Please, Mother...Erik. You can't ask me to suffer this. Do you not think I suffer enough being that I am? We could force them to leave. You could teach me. I would be your most devoted protege.
*He wandered the room idly, waiting for them to finish.*

Megan watched Julian and shuddered.
"So, he came out of you?"

*Erik's eyes flickered to Julian and rested for a moment on the man's broad back. His words whispered through him with a serpent's forked tongue. An ambition he had not felt since...*
Would you indeed? *he whispered in his mind, wondering if Julian could hear him. Wondering if that meant he could read Erik's every thought.* And what would you have Erik teach you?
"What of it?" *he asked Megan.* "Erik's parents were married; it did not seem to do him any good."

"It just seems to me that- Never mind, I was still clinging to the idea that you would ever..."

*Julian smiled cruelly at Megan, watching her plead. Where all humans like this? He sighed softly.*
Would you not want an apprentice? Someone that cares for your work as you do? Someone who loves as you do? You can teach me much. I am certain. Will you keep me with you here? Below?

"So like a woman," *Erik said in a vaguely sing-song voice, encouraged by the silent voice of his son.* "Always clinging, aren't you?"
*The promise of power over another creature, such as he felt towards Julian, was heady and seductive. He had forgotten, a little, what it was to be cruel. Well, to be conscious of it, that is.*
Yes... *his own voice hissed in his mind.* Stay.

"I'm not taking care of this baby on my own."

"No," *he said soothingly to Megan.* "You aren't. Erik will help you."
*He was beginning to see the possibilities in a daughter, even an ugly one.
An ugly one wouldn't leave him.
And there was something attractive about a dynasty, after all.*

*Julian's face hardened.*
You want it? Her? Surely you do not mean...
*Setting his jaw firmly, he gave a curt bow to Erik.*
As you wish.
*He slipped silently to Megan, drawing up behind her, taking in her smell. If he had to abide her, he would make that best of it. His voice was haunting in her ear, low and dark.*
"And how would you have me address you then?"

Megan shuddered slightly at the feeling of his hand on her shoulder. There was something oddly alluring about him, as much as she didn't want to admit it.
"I am Megan," she said softly, "mother of your sister Proserpina."

((Am I assuming correctly that Julian can read Erik's thoughts?))
Surely you see the benefit of an army, *Erik chided Julian.* Or rather... a being we might raise to our will, who must needs exist outside the bounds of humanity. Who is... dependent upon us.
*It would not be easy, he knew, to live with all of them in his rapidly shrinking house and simultaneously win Christine back. But Megan's regard for him would win any argument that didn't involved killing unborn fetuses, and he would take care that that mistake was not made again.
He watched Megan for her reaction.*

"The baby's hungry," Megan said flatly.
She unbuttoned the top of her dress, pulled her shawl over one side, slid Proserpina under the shawl, and reached under to fold down her chemise. Proserpina latched on, and Megan sat there in uncomfortable silence.
The manthing was too hot to be safe.

((Yes.))
Very well. You know best. But she is not my sister.
*Julian traced his tongue over Megan's ear. His breath was warm against it.*
"As you would have it...Megan."
*And then he was suddenly gone, moving on to study the rest of the room. He gave an aloof gesture of mild boredom.*
"So who will show me this place, and find me a space of my own?"
