*She frowned a little.*
"She should've."
*Being the only one to look like this hadn't bothered her too much, when she had hardly anyone to compare herself with. Though now she was growing up. She understood more, now.*

*He hadn't wanted children. He'd wanted Megan to get rid of this one; it still seemed the kindest thing. But it was here now, and Erik wouldn't allow her to become what he was.*
"She loves you, Pina. And she once loved Erik; which means that everyone can be loved by someone. It doesn't matter, so much, being different--as long as someone will see you the same as anyone else."

*She nodded slowly.*
"I understand." *She knew she had that, from her mother and now Julian. She smiled.*
"I think I'm okay."

"Good."
*Erik smiled. But now he was at a loss. He remembered Megan asking him to take an interest in the child, and it was certainly easier now that she could speak. But he didn't have a lot of practice with this.*
"Do you have any other questions, Pina?"

*She thought about it for a moment.*
"People call you the phantom. Why?"

*Erik chuckled.*
"Because, my dear, Erik used to haunt the opera house. He was ugly and unwanted, so he built a home down here and entertained himself by frightening the ballet rats."
*He thought perhaps this wasn't what Megan had had in mind.*

*She laughed.*
"Scaring the ballerinas? That's all you did?"

*Erik paused.*
"Not all Erik did," *he said hesitantly.* "But it certainly was fun."
*He reached out and tugged lightly on one of Pina's curls.*
"Don't grow up like your papa," *he said cheerfully.* "He's a bad, bad man."

*She giggled.*
"I'll try not to. But you can't be all bad," *she said with a smile.*

"No? Well if you say so, Pina, it must be true."
*She wasn't so bad after all. No... It was not horrible, having people around him who did not care how he looked.*

"Well, my Mama likes you. Mostly," *she said.* "And I do too."

"That makes Erik very happy," *he said solemnly.* "Thank you, Pina. You're much more interesting than I expected."

"Thank you!"
I think.
"I don't try to. I'm just me," *she said with a shrug.*

*Even her reply was sort of... charming. This fatherhood thing was turning out all right after all.*
"That probably has something to do with it. People who try to be interesting are nearly always interesting for the wrong reasons."

"'Cause they're pretending?"
*She understood that, a little. she knew it was important to not lie to get people to like you. Not that she had that problem, because she never met any new people. She hoped that would change, though.*
