"I know that she wasn't very... supportive."

*Erik laughed bitterly, breaking off from his study of the child to pace about the room.*
"'Supportive'? Is this one of your futuristic notions of child-rearing? Mother clothed me--all too well, you might say--though she refused to put the clothes on me herself. She fed me; again, she provided the food, while I learned to use utensils in the room she provided for Erik's use. Erik did not ask for 'support'; all he required was attention. Minimal, at that. But he got that surely enough, when he ran away and had to make a living."
*He turned to face them, his cloak folding silently behind him.*
"At least she will never have to live as I did."

((This is blurry, but here's a baby picture of me that shows why Pina has SERIOUS CHEEKS: )) "Do you want to hold her again? I think she likes you, too."

((That is a terrible picture. I can almost see what you mean. ) *Erik fell silent. He did not wish to promote attachment to the child. They were fragile and messy, and it seemed altogether the best policy merely to see it did not end up on the streets. But he wasn't certain he wanted to see Megan's face when he refused. So he took her.* "How can one tell?"

"See how she's cuddling against you?"

*He kept watching the child. He saw no especial recognition of his presence.*
"It is only natural, as the child is helpless," *he said.* "She seeks the comfort available, does she not?"

"She started crying when Snape held her. 'Course, I would too, but you know what I mean. You at least don't freak her out."

*Erik frowned.*
"My face... is not a frightening thing, anymore."
*Were he to resume his other shape, as he had for that terrifying moment, matters would be different.*

The child yawned and promptly fell asleep.

"And apparently unremarkable, in general," *he said, suddenly struck by the trust of this little being. It did not fear him, or shrink, as others did. It slept on, untroubled. Like Julian, he held its life in his hands, but this was different. It was completely void of preconceived notions, of self. It was pure. Untouched.*
"She might be... anything," *he whispered.*

Megan smiled and kissed his cheek.
"Our baby," she said fondly.

*Erik's eyes were trained on the infant.*
"Yes..." *he drew out.* "How curious."

Megan leaned her head against his arm and sighed.

*Erik started as if he'd suddenly realized the picture they made; the nuclear family, at peace. This was not what he'd bargained for! He could not start caring about these things, these beings who depended upon him. He could not start depending on them in turn; for everything died, and no one remained true.
He'd wakened the baby, and hastily returned it to its mother's arms.*
"It... is loud."

Megan took Pina back into her arms and patted her back.
"I think she's sleepy."
