"Erik, please, at least let her stay with me for a little while. Let me see her again. I haven't seen her in so long-"

*Erik's yellow eyes burned in the dim light.*
"Erik doesn't trust you. You will take her from me. You will lie and twist my words and twist her mind against me. I cannot lose her!"

"You let her think I was dead!"

*He shook his head.*
"I never said that. I told her you were ill, and away; that was not a lie. You'd say worse to her about me, if Erik gave you the chance. Erik even came to you, to effect some reconciliation, to allow her to see her mother. You refused me."

"Because you would have owned me, Erik."

*Erik's eyes narrowed.*
"We all make choices," *he said.* "Do you think Erik would have risked Pina's wrath if he saw any other way?"

"I'm not saying she has to stay permanently, Erik..."

*Even Erik knew that the more one forced a woman to love one, the more likely they were to look elsewhere. He had let Christine see Raoul on the premises, after all. And look how that had turned out.*
"Erik doesn't trust you," *he said.* "What confidence can he have that you will not spirit her away?"

"I only want to see her again. If she's happier with you..."

*That struck Erik momentarily dumb. He blinked cat-like eyes at her.*
"Erik never intended to take her mother away entirely," *he grumbled.* "But how can he be certain you will not leave Paris with her?"

"I'll take her to the wedding, wherever that is. And then I'll let her make up her mind. Besides," she added darkly, "she and I look more alike now than you two do..."

*The deal reminded him vaguely of his with Christine at the Bal Masque. But her next words infuriated him. He drew himself up to his full height.*
"How dare you mock Erik now? You come here with your dandy to insult Erik and his daughter? You cover her with a veil, make her afraid to look at me, and now you throw this in his face?"
*Erik tore the mask off, his mind whirling in anger.*

"I- I didn't realize you'd... changed."

"Too wrapped up in your own misery?" *he sneered.* "How typical. Doubtless you find it just punishment for sending you away."
*He punched the wall furiously, then stood there, lungs heaving.*
"If you take her..." *He trailed off. He hated the broken way the words left his throat.*

"I want her to come with me for the wedding and make up her own mind! That's all I ask!" Megan shouted. "It'll be a while before that happens... I'm in no state to be a bride..."
