***NEW DAY***
*Julian sat by the lake, skipping some random stones across the water's surface. It was fascinating to watch. And he was getting quite good. Nearby, a dark-haired rat munched on a small bit of cheese.*
"I know. But it seems to be something you can acquire through practice."

*Pina looked up from her book. She hadn't noticed him there. She stood up, and approached him, leaving the book on the ground.*
"Were you talking to me?"

*Julian looked up, surprised to be addressed. By a human at least. By her face there was no mistaking her, but she seemed...older. Bigger.*
"Properpina...forgive me. I did not know that you were here. And...reading."

*She walked over, her doll in hand.*
"It's all right. What are you doing?" *she asked, looking at the stones with interest.*

*Julian eyed the girl with a small smirk, holding up a stone*
"I am learning to defy gravity. Would you like a go at it?"

*She carefully put the doll down, positioning it so it was sitting up. She didn't want Mirabelle to miss out.*
"Yes, please."
*She held out her hand for the stone.*
"How do you do it?"

*The cruel smile grew as Julian knelt behind her and cradled her small hand in his own. He drew it back, trying to guide her throw.*
"Like this. And snap your wrist."

*Her brow furrowed in concentration, she did her best to mimic his movements, but when the stone hit the water it sunk, well... like a stone. She frowned.*
"Why didn't it jump?"

*Julian wanted to say something bitter, something biting, but she wouldn't understand and it would only push her away. And he didn't want that. Not now. He sighed and stood, picking up another stone. He set his posture carefully, slowing so she might see.*
"Like this."
*He drew his arm back and tossed the stone, watching it skip 12 times before sinking into the water. He turned back to her, uncharacteristically patient.*
"See?

*Her large eyes narrowed in concentration, she picked up a smooth round stone and imitated his throw nearly perfectly. She grinned in obvious glee and triumph when it skipped once... twice... three times.*
"Did you see that! I did it!"

*Julian nodded once in acknowledgment, then knelt beside her, taking her hands gently.*
"You did. Very well. I believe that there is nothing you cannot do, if you put your mind to it."

((Well... I did tell you she might be useful one day.))

((Julian, you bad influence. Heeee.))
*She smiled, a new sort of determination in her eyes.*
"I can..."
*She thought about this for a moment. There were so many things she couldn't do- she couldn't go outside without her mother, or without the veil. She couldn't play with anyone her own age... *
"Absolutely anything?"

((Who? Me? Never...))
*Julian's smile twisted cruelly.*
"Absolutely anything. Even if your mother says it's naughty."
*He glanced back to the lake for a moment.*
"We are different from them....the outsiders. But you know that, don't you Proserpina?"
