It clung to him until he set it down again, and then it scrambled under the blankets all the way to the foot of the bed and lay shivering in a tightly curled ball.

*Julian didn't know what to do. So he sat on the bed, watching the huddling mass.*
"What else is it that you need?"

Izame popped its head out of the blankets, blinked transparently at the man and disappeared again, writhing around and coming out near Julian, curling up against his leg.

*Julian sighed and rested his hand on the creature's back.*
"I am sorry that I don't know what you need."
*He was frustrated by his own inadequacies, but still fascinated by the extraordinary situation.*

It snuggled into him and traced a claw over the slice in Julian's trousers where it had earlier cut his leg open, workings its jaws.
It managed garbble out something that sounded like a hoarse, forced "Apple"

*Julian concentrated, looking quite stern as he tried to remember where he'd seen the creature hide them earlier.*

*He stood and disappeared out the door and down the hall.*

It pulled itself back under the blankets to hide when the man left and popped out again when Julian came back with the fruit, which it took into its webbed and white-clawed little hands.
The creature laid on its side half out of the blankets and turned the apple over in its claws, opened its jaws and touched its teeth to the flesh of the fruit, but didn't seen enthusiastic about the treat, unable or unwilling to eat it. It gave a low, mournful clicking and abandoned the apple on the mattress, curling over the other way.

It churred sadly, not sure what it was meant to have lost--Henry had died years ago.
"Ugly monster."

*Julian's eyes turned tender, some half-memory making his chest ache terribly.*
"No. Not ever."
*He softly caressed the new skin of the creature's head.*
"You are beautiful. And unique."

It was still soft, velvety, but within a day or two the skin would roughen up over his dorsal surfaces.
It chirred a bit, softly and curled back over to nuzzle against Julian's leg again.
"Is okay?"

"Very." *Julian gave a slightly eerie smile.*
"And Erik will find you most fascinating."

"Care care Erik already knows shark...is...not pretty, like shark. But...Care Julian pretty pretty."
The little creature trilled up at him.

*Julian tilted his head, understanding just beyond him.*
"You don't think that Erik will like your new shape?"

"Is...monster. Make afraid. Not pretty man-shape now."
The sharkman picked up the apple it had abandoned and rolled it around on the mattress between its hands.
