Jamison left before Erik could argue with him about the term "animal" and he scowled slightly at the door. But went about his business anyway. He'd seen where the professor kept the food, and retrieved three fish and three apples, as instructed, before entering the tank again. He didn't want to just throw it in there.
He padded in front of the creature and held out his breakfast.
"I don't think you're an animal at all," he said quietly.

*****((As Izame, cause I'm lazy))*****
The creature trilled and grasped at the apples, ignoring the fish--it still had some alive in its tank.
It stuffed the apples into its maw, chewing and smiling at Erik.
"Animal." it repeated.

He had spoken! Erik had thought so last night, but he'd told himself he'd imagined it. He smiled without reservation.
"No, you're not," he said. "Not an animal." He pointed at the fish. "This is animal."

***AS IZAME***
The sharkman grabbed the fish from the bucket and tossed it into the tank, watching it wake up and swim off.
"Fishhhh." it hissed and turned its attention back to Erik, knocking against his mask. "Care."

So he knew how to speak, already. Sort of. He'd been playing! Erik shook his head.
"No, that's... that's a mask," he said, confused.

****AS IZAME*****
It shook its head, hunkering down in front of Erik and touching his narrow chest.
"Care," then himself. "care. Care care."
And it lifted its claws and tapped the mask. "Dead-face under. Shhhh. Shark talk, Shhhhhh."

"Yes, I'll care for you," he agreed. He started at the words "dead face," opening his mouth to say something, anything, when he caught the creature's meaning.
"Shark" was himself.
"I won't tell," he promised. "You're very clever, aren't you? Not to let on. I won't tell about you... and you won't tell about me. Is that your name? Shark?"

***AS IZAME***
It tilted its head, opaque lids flicking across its black eyes, not understanding the concept of names.

It didn't understand. It was hard, Erik was realizing, not knowing what the creature knew, but it was exciting all the same. He pointed to his own chest.
"Erik," he said. "That's me. That's... what I am called." He pointed at Izame. "What are you called?"

"Care care Erik." It smiled and trilled at him, curling arms around him and stroking his hair for a moment.
"Say "merman, shark, sharkman, fishman, fish, creature, swimmer, thing, monster."" it rattled off all the things it could remember being called at the carnival.

It certainly was demonstrative. Erik was not used to that, but he bore it with a strange mixture of gratitude and discomfort.
Though he stiffened at the list of words.
"You aren't a monster," he said, his voice low and insistent. "Or, for that matter, a fish or a shark or a merman. You aren't some abomination of something else." Like I am.

"Oh."
It said, letting Erik go and hopping around the tank a bit.
"Okay say "shark", Care care Erik. Black-hair men, not net-men say "wanizame", swim swim, think shark magic, not catch like net-men, brown-yellow hair."

He was still getting the hang of parsing the creature's--Shark's--strange speech, but it was fun and Erik felt vindicated.
And hated men. The brown-yellow hair sort, anyway. They were the sort who had locked him up, too.
"They shouldn't have caught you," he said. "But you'd prefer Shark to Wanizame?"

"Okay say "shark" "wanizame" "Izame" "Iza" yes yes."
It trilled and grabbed Erik's hand, tugging him toward the water.
"Care care Erik water now? Is good?"

Erik glanced around to see if the Professor was back.
"I don't think I should, right now," he said. "And... I can't swim."
He felt a bit embarrassed at that, but he had never learned. And Wanizame was so graceful, so natural, that he was certain to feel embarrassed trying.
