After shoveling the pastries in and replacing the peel, Mrs. Waterbury wiped her forehead and moved to the sink. "Thank you, Erik," she called, scrubbing the flour from her pudgy, ruddy forearms. "When you're done with your breakfast, kindly bring your dishes here, and I will give you your room key. I think the professor is waiting downstairs."

Erik glanced at the table, astonished at how much he'd eaten. There was barely anything left. He ate the last crust of pastry, downed the last of his tea, and stacked the dishes neatly to bring to Mrs. Waterbury. He stood there in some sort of indecision before finally speaking.
"Thank you, Mrs. Waterbury."

"Not at all, not at all, I don't mind a bit, my lad. Here, just you take this now," she fished in her pocket and drew out the little brass key for his room and dropped it into his long, bony hands, "and run along. We can talk about keeping up your room later, as I'm sure the professor's got plenty of work for you to do down in that dungeon o' his. Have a pleasant morning, Master Erik."
