*The castle was quiet, save for the almost inaudible footfalls of the master of the house. Krolock, in a walk that almost seemed a glide, made his way over to Herbert's room, where the younger vampire was recovering from his injuries.
His son had caused him no small amount of worry, and even now Krolock's forehead was creased with concern. Vampires shouldn't heal so slowly...
He quietly opened the door, peering around it to see if Herbert was asleep. He didn't want to disturb him if he was.*

"Guten Abend, Vati..." Herbert murmured from the bed, smiling in a very tired way.

*Krolock did his best to smile as he entered the room. He hated seeing Herbert hurting*
"Mein sohn..."
*He moved to Herbert's side*
"I am so very glad you are back home."

Herbert put his arms around his father in a way he hadn't done since he was a child- or at least, not since the night he had asked his father to kill him to save him.

*He hugged Herbert back, gently, keeping in mind his son's injuries. Krolock was both furious and hurt that Herbert had gone off without telling him, but at the same time, he felt a wave of relief that he'd returned home.*
"Though we are nigh indestructable, I still feared the worse. I've never been more happy at being wrong."

"I was so worried that they'd come for you... you weren't here d- d- during the l-last time this happened..."

"I can understand your fears, my dear boy, but you shouldn't have worried. Any attackers would themselves crashing upon these walls like waves on sand."

His defenses now fully broken down, Herbert began to cry.
"I was so scared, Vati..."

*It was almost as though time had turned backwards--as though now, a younger Krolock was holding child Herbert in his arms, trying to comfort the boy as best he could. Rather than words, Krolock instead started to hum*

"I'm so sorry, Vati..."

"Hush, Herbert. Don't apologize. I'm just glad you're all right, and that you're home."
*It was true--the fury he'd felt had already dissipated, almost gone in the wake of the relief he felt*

"Vati, am I still beautiful?" he asked quietly. "Zira says I am, but I don't know- he'd say it anyway-"

*He sat back, the better to meet Herbert's eyes*
"Yes, you are. I don't think anything could ever mar it."

"It always comes to you and I and me almost dying, doesn't it?" Herbert sighed, looking almost amused in spite of the pain.

*He gave his son a wry smile*
"It does seem that way, doesn't it? Though, never both of us at once."
