"If you were listening you'd have heard me say that I know this not to be true" he gritted his teeth "and I know we can't, but you have to understand... we will try. Tell me, how would you feel if you had a daughter and found out that your friend, an older fellow, was having a relationship with her. Behind your back none the less, tell me Pina, how would that make you feel, to be in our shoes?"

In James mind he saw himself blubbering on about how, of course he wanted her to be happy and he's sorry for all the inconveniences that he had caused, to go ahead have a happy life. But he couldn't bring himself to say it.
"You never answered my question Pina, how would you feel?"

He sighed, she answered well enough, Pina had proved to him that she was still a child and she wasn't looking at the future; he placed his hands on his knees.
But once again he wouldn't say anything "Than you have no idea how it feels my dear."

"I've got nothing more to say to you" he said standing up "I truly hope" he said softly "that you have kept your thoughts pure. For if I find that he's touched you, or that you have touched him in anyway that isn't christian-" he bit his lip and turned from her "I shall be quite put out."

"Well, I haven't," *she snapped, perhaps a little too forcefully.* "How dare you even think that?"

He couldn't say why, but he had relied on his instincts so far and they had done him no wrong, it was his heart that had hurt him the most.
He didn't respond he simply began moving toward the door, his head a little too high.
