"... so? What is it you're carrying a sword around for?"

"Well..." She lowered her voice.
"Aside from the usual ruffians, there are some very strange sorts who have...extraordinary ability, it seems."

"They're stronger, or faster, or very mesmerizing with their eyes."
Sophie knew the information was purely form her mother, but her mother wasn't one to make up wild stories, and Sophie herself had seen some odd things in her wanderings.
"So beguiling yet so dangerous."

"... oh. I thought you were going to tell me they had fangs were part of a secret cult or something. The newspapers all blather on about cults and love-nests but it's never true."

((Ha!))
"Cults?" She said, raising an eyebrow. "I hadn't heard of one of those being around."

"That's because they tend not to be. In my experience, newspapers, and indeed books, tend to be a lot more interesting than whatever's going on in real life."

"Oh, I don't know about that..."
Thanks to what she'd heard, she wouldn't be at all surprised if there was a cult operating somewhere in Paris.
"There a few real life stories that are just as interesting as books." She said enigmatically.

"I mean, my parents and grandparents all have very romantic histories, but I've never heard of real life being more exciting than books. Pirate books are always more exciting than real-live pirates, especially since pirates probably smell."

Sophie laughed.
"I...would agree, about the pirates. I'm sure they aren't as nice in person.
I suppose my view on life is a bit different, growing up on the stories of my mother's adventures."
Her eyes were twinkling, thinking that perhaps, she could have adventures like those.

"Your mother had adventures?" *She'd been thinking that said mother had only told Sophie stories about such adventures, not directly participated.*

"Before I was born, she led quite an interesting existence--secret meetings and plots, kidnappings and escapes. She'd even once been in a house that was on fire!"

"Oh, my grandparents' house burned down once! But it was only part of it, and my father just remembers a lot of shouting and running about."
