Shadi smiled crookedly, a little sadly.
"How I've ruined you," she lamented, strangely inclined to fuss over him. Some combination of guilt and delight, which roiled uneasily within her and gave a sort of manic energy. "Come on--we'll get you off the floor and I'll get you a drink."

"Just the thing, darling." *Rochester wrapped his arm around her, using her support to get into the chair near him. He rubbed his temples, though he couldn't tell what was aching, his backside or his pride.*

Shadi darted about, getting him a stiff brandy and making up a plate of cookies before flying back to his side.
((LOLOLOL "STIFF BRANDI"))

((Please don't make me choke. )) *Rochester took the brandy, swallowing it in one go, immediately saddened when he found no more in the cup. But just the act of it seemed to calm him a bit.* "I'm all right...quite all right..." *He murmured, mostly to himself as he half-waved away her worry.*

Shadi allowed herself to be waved away, but only to retrieve the decanter and trot back to his side to refill his glass.
"I won't do it ever again," she assured him, hovering a bit. "Promise. Please don't hate me."

*Rochester had finished another glass in a gulp before her words sank in. He immediately set down the glass, turning to face her fully and take her hands in his.*
"No. Shadi...no matter what...I could never hate you."
*His eyes burned with the will to make her believe it.*

Shadi's cheeks burned as if with the force of his gaze as he regarded her, calling to mind the sight he must have seen, worse still than the one she'd seen him in with the woman.
"But I... I don't know what I was thinking," she said miserably.

*Rochester's face softened.*
"You were trying to help. How can I begrudge you for that?"
*He smiled, his thumb rubbing the back of her hand.*

"Because I hurt you," she blurted, suddenly burying her face in his chest. "I never wanted to do that."

*Rochester lifted his hand to cradle her cheek.*
"Aren't you a dear."
*His smile was tender, but held a sadness as well.*
"It's not your fault, Shadi. You didn't know...couldn't know..."
*He caressed her skin softly, trying to soothe her. It distracted him from his own pain.*

His touch did reassure her, and she looked up, a little more collected.
"So you aren't... you don't... What can I do?"

*Rochester sighed softly, lowering his hand to pour another drink. At least he sipped this one.*
"Perhaps..." *He considered suggesting retiring to the parlor, but he immediately thought better of it, the image of her entwined burning back into his mind.*
"A walk in the garden with me?" *He squeaked meekly.* "The fresh air might help."

Shadi nodded, grateful for something to do.
"Of course."
She rose, reaching uncertainly for his hand.

*Rochester stood, pausing only a moment at the hand she offered. But it was not for the reason she might think but only for the fact that the spirits he had quickly imbibed on an empty stomach were now coursing through him. He swayed slightly, but caught her hand and with his glass in the other, walked towards the door to the garden.*

Shadi glanced at his empty glass.
"Hold on," she said. She poured another measure, took it from him and drank it down, before returning it, full, to his hand. "Good," she said, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. And they walked into the garden.
