"You needn't lie, merely because Erik is going to die," Erik said. "You'd be doing Erik a favor. You've done them in the past, Megan. This is the last."

She bit her lip and shook her head. "I can't do it, Erik, please don't make me- you're going to live, and everything's going to be all right-"

"It is never," Erik said with bitter certainty, "going to be all right again."
But he did not press the issue. Erik never wanted to die. Not really. Though he often thought so.

"I'll take care of you until you're well again- I know James will object, but there needs to be someone looking out for you..."

If Erik had anything that still resembled a lip, he'd have curled it.
"That's just like you, isn't it, Megan? To make allowances, and time, for those who are helpless. For pity."

"I wish I didn't still care about you..."

Erik chuckled weakly.
"I suppose you rather wish you never had," he pointed out. "Inconvenient, isn't it? I never understood it, really."

"If I had never cared about you, Pina wouldn't exist," Megan countered.

"And what a comfort that must be, to have a daughter you must hide from her father, and whom you've taught to hide from the world," he said dryly. "Yes, there is Pina... but she wasn't enough, was she? And she is lost to us both, now."

"I'm so worried for her," Megan admitted, after soaking the rag again and beginning to clean the wounds on his face. "Though I must admit, he hardly seems the type to go about seducing young girls. And our daughter is- well, not many people can see how beautiful she is."

The wounds smarted. Erik focused on his anger to ignore the pain.
"Don't let him fool you," he said darkly. "Such a man--with such deficiencies as he has--is all the more likely to choose someone he can easily win. Pina has no defenses. She is like you, that way. Easy prey for any pitiable creature who happens by."

"I didn't notice any 'deficiencies' save that scar across his face and the way he walks," Megan admitted. "But you're right... She's far too much like me."

"He's a miserable cripple," Erik said unkindly. "Not to mention dead. And short. Have you put a stop to it yet?"

"I think he's with her now..." Megan said uncomfortably.

"He didn't die in the fire?" Erik grumbled. "Megan, this is serious. Ouch! You have to... stop them..."
*A grimace suffused his face. He was feeling faint, which was welcome considering the pain. He had to remember to breathe.*
