Rogue gazed around, impressed not by the spookiness but by her memories of how she'd wanted to be in school plays, but was a little shy and couldn't exactly sing.
"It's awesome," she said, smiling. "I wanted to be an actress, when I was a kid. I mean, not really. I guess everyone does."

"I've always been in the limelight... I suppose I don't know what it's like to be an average person... human or otherwise..." he said, creeping toward the empty stage. It was mostly dark, and he cupped his hands around his eyes, trying to focus his vision on a single point.
"I wonder how strong the acoustics are in this place."

"I guess I'd like to be average, now," Rogue said quietly, almost to herself. Being different was not nearly the fun she'd thought it'd be, when she started dressing like this. She shook her head. "Why don't you try it out?" she prompted, moving forward and pushing Jack closer to the stage.

"Oh, well, if you think I should..." Jack flushed a little, not quite prepared for any singing, but he supposed he could pull something out of his tailcoat. It was not as if he was not familiar with performing, but he hoped Rogue would like it. Human tastes varied so much from his home world. Something did come to mind, and he started to sing, closing his eyes to be swept up in the slow, sad song.((Above url is not from the movie, but Michael Ball's voice fits Jack almost as well as Elfman's))

((Hee, I love that he sang Jack. Elfman, I mean.))
Rogue stood in the shadows of the wings, smiling broadly as Jack began to sing. She hugged herself, not out of cold or fear but pleasure. It was so nice, to know someone so talented. So interesting. And he sang beautifully... she should have imagined it was so, but she hadn't.
When he was done, she wanted to clap, but the silence was so magical she didn't feel she could. So she stepped forward, smiling with a hint of tears in her eyes, her hands clasped in front of her like a schoolgirl.

((me too! <3))
Jack stood there a few moments, still absorbed in the music that had just poured from him. Recovering himself, Jack turned and took a deep breath, a smile on his lips as he turned to Rogue.
"Did you like it, Rogue? Did it sound all right?" he asked, taking note of her expression, the way she held herself. "Are you all right?"

((IT'S A DEAD MAN'S PARTY, YO))
She started forward at that, taking his hands in her own.
"No, it was beautiful," she said, beaming. "I've never known anyone who could sing like that."
Her joy was somewhat embarrassing, but who cared?

"Oh, thank you," he said softly, a nervous smile on his lips as he took her hands. "I mean, I'm glad you liked it, because if you like it, then that makes me happy. If that makes sense... you're the only person I have here, so..."
Jack sighed and hung his head, chuckling nervously. "I'm just rambling off again," he murmured, running his thumbs over the backs of Rogue's gloves, and watching himself do so.

"It's okay," Rogue said softly, feeling unaccountably content in the midst of the strange nervousness. She watched his fingers move across her gloves, and wondered why she wasn't moving her hands away. "I mean, I don't have anyone either."

"So we have each other," he said with even more quiet to his tone, glad that Rogue had not pulled away. He didn't think he could let her. "You know, even though we've only known each other a couple days, I feel really lucky to have bumped into you." Or the signpost she happened to be near at the time.

A grin flashed across Rogue's face, fleeting and relieved and nervous all at once. Her breath was coming a little quickly, and she tried to calm it, to take longer, deeper ones. Stupid, she called herself. Jack didn't even understand what the danger was, here.
Maybe that was why she was acting this way.
"No, it hasn't been long," she said. "But I do, too. Before... I didn't have much of anyone. Anyone who cared to understand me, anyway."

Jack didn't feel the need to reiterate how he was surrounded by people who had given him superficial adoration for his work. Rarely did he meet someone who understood and cared for him and all his creative energy.
"I know how you feel," he said, shifting a little closer. His new heart was beating faster, though he couldn't grasp why, and he leaned in over Rogue, pulling her a little closer by her hands. "But I'm here," he said, giving her hands a little squeeze.

"Me too," Rogue said stupidly, but she'd already said as much. As she looked up at Jack, she suddenly realized that this was Very Dangerous. And one of those things that Couldn't Happen. Not only because of what she was, but what Jack was. It seemed... well aside from the actual, physical danger to him, it was unfair. He hadn't even been a person for more than a day.
She looked away suddenly, needing to break that gaze before something happened she couldn't take back. She felt so stupid. She hadn't known him that long. This wasn't, couldn't be, what it seemed like. She was just lonely.
"That's settled, then," she said with false cheer.

Jack, disconnected from that... what was it? feeling, let go of Rogue's hands with her looking away, his smile faded and off center as he tried to regain himself. He felt awkward and embarrassed, as if he'd forgotten something very important that he should have paid attention to.
"Oh, yes, right..." he said, clearing his throat a moment and straightening up. "Well, we're not going to find a library in here..." he said, voice a little disjointed. Had he upset Rogue? Or was he moving in the wrong direction?
Humans, he decided, were difficult.

I'm difficult, Rogue was thinking. He's going to find out, and he's going to leave me. He doesn't even know me. And when he does... I have to make sure. That I don't drive him away.
He was already put off by her now, she could tell. She smiled wider than she felt. "No, but the stage is good to know about," she pointed out. "But shouldn't it be sort of close? Like... with offices, or something."
