"Not if you knock," he conceded. Erik shifted slightly, as if gearing up for something.
"Does it lock from the outside? I mean... just the outside?"

Jamison cocked his head. "No, no, the lock turns from the inside. The key is only needed to unlock it from the outside. I believe the housekeeper, Mrs. Waterbury--I suppose you two will have to be introduced--I believe she has the single copy for that room. We can get it for you first thing in the morning. Would that suit you?"

Erik nodded, immensely relieved. He would have to remain on his guard, but he decided he could stay here. For a bit, anyway. Until he figured out how to help the merman, and secreted away more savings.
"Yes," he said, adding, "thank you."

"You're more than welcome. Now," he rooted through the papers on his desk and drew up the 'contract' he had written earlier, "You can read this through if you'd like, though I'll tell you now that it merely refers back to the papers we just finished. This is our contract for your services, you see? This paper is proof of our agreement on the terms we just finished discussing and our word that we will abide by them. We can sign it in the morning, after we've both had some sleep and decided on your wage. I can take you to your new room now, if you'd like, unless you have somewhere else you are staying to return to." He rose from his seat.
"Or unless there is anything else you'd wish to discuss?"

Erik stood simultaneously, his eyes flickering to the tank.
"I don't have anywhere," he said. "But can I say goodnight to him, first?"

"If you'd like."
Jamison crossed to the stairs and waited.

Without another thought, Erik, tripped lightly across the floor to the tank, peering into it to find the creature.

It had bored of watching them interact and was out of the water and upon the muddy portion of shore, digging up one of the apples it had buried there, hopping to the water an leaning over to swish it around and clean off the mud when it spotted Erik and grinned.
It dropped the apple and slid into the water so that it could be on level with him, pressing up against the glass and watching him.

Erik smiled despite himself and pressed his hand up against the glass.
"Goodnight," he said politely. "It looks like I shall be looking after you after all."

The creature turned back and swam around the tank, hopping up onto the shore again with its apple and trundling off into its cave.

Erik supposed that was that, but it was enough. He turned back to Jamison.
"I'm ready to see my room," he said.

"Very good. If you would care to follow me?"
Jamison turned and ascended the stairs, satisfied when he heard the whisper of the child's footsteps behind him. He emerged on the main floor and crossed through the parlor toward the dining room. "Mrs. Waterbury can see to preparing your room properly in the morning. I think it should be sufficient for tonight, however; it hasn't seen an occupant in some time, but I believe she changed the linens just last week, and you are welcome to open the window, if you wish."
They passed through the dining room and up the narrow set of back stairs that led to the second floor. Jamison took out his ring of keys and paused before one of the three narrow, oak doors in the hall.
"Should you need it, the water closet is just down this hallway, off to the right. And this, Erik," he said, turning the key in the lock and turning the knob, "is your room."

Erik peered in, as if afraid to venture further than the range of the door and therefore risk being trapped. It was far nicer than anyplace he'd slept since leaving home--even then, he'd been relegated to the attic for some time. There was a bed and a window and even a little desk and shelves. His own lamp on a little table beside the bed.
"Thank you," he said quietly.

"Not at all, young man. Now, if there is nothing else, this old man needs to retire. You should, as well; it's gone past three, I expect, and there will be much to do in the morning. I'll leave a note for Waterbury in the kitchen explaining your presence in the event you wake before me . Beastly woman, but a damn good housekeeper; just ask her for breakfast, if you want it, and when I come down, we'll procure your key."
He yawned, stretched, and turned to leave.

Erik took this all in and nodded once before retreating into his new room.
