*Valmont laughed bitterly and smiled wryly up at Rochester.*
"As her lover or her father?"

*Rochester was forced to pause on that one.*
"Well, it merely seemed the best way to find a cure to your...predicament, should one be available."

*Valmont grimaced.*
"Desperate, isn't it?" *he said, disgusted.* "What has brought me to this pass? It's absurd. Just a slip of a girl. No breeding at all. And no respect."

*Rochester chuckled softly.*
"I think that's what does it, to be truthful. We get so used to the respect...when they don't, it gets us all...disoriented. Not fair, really."

"Do you think they know, and do it on purpose?" *he wondered.* "I keep thinking she's just lying to herself. She responded enthusiastically enough, you know, in the moment. But the rest of the time, it's as if I'm the devil, and she's on a crusade to get me behind her, only not in the nice way. She won't even condescend to try to reform me, which would at least be entertaining."
*He paused.*
"I sent her an atlas."

*Rochester sighed empathetically.*
"Who knows? Perhaps they do it in vengeance for our dastardly good looks."
*He paused, unsure of what else to say to help. These things were complicated.*

*Valmont smiled at that.*
"You may have a point there, old man." *He sighed. He'd been hoping Rochester would be able to knock some sense into him, but it didn't seem to be working as he'd hoped.* "I apologize for taking up your time," *he said, a bit embarrassed now.* "Not very seemly, is it?"

*Rochester gave a dismissive flip of his wrist.*
"No worries, old chap. I always have time for you."
*He smiled rakishly.*
"Sorry I didn't have a better prescription for your affliction."

"I thought I did," *he said.* "The usual remedies aren't really working."

*Rochester sighed.*
"Believe me, chap, it's bound to get worse if you worry it. If you want to be free of her, the only thing you can do is cut all bounds and pray she's not already to deep under your skin."
*He smiled with a hint of irony.*
"Or you can try a radical strategy and surrender."
*He gave a playful wink.*

"All that got me was drunk," *Valmont smiled.* "And if she is my daughter, well... that's that."

*Rochester did his best not to frown. He was only trying to be helpful. But the situation was really f**ked up complicated.*
"Then perhaps..." *He offered gently.* "Seeking that knowledge might be your first course of action? At least then you would know your options for the next step."

*Valmont nodded.*
"I have my man on that front," *he said.* "You're right; my panic is unseemly, without evidence. Still... it would explain my absurd regard, all out of proportion for the event itself."
*He rose.*
"Thank you, Rochester, for not pitching me out on first glance. I must sound like a madman."

*Rochester followed suit, standing and bowing his head to the man.*
"Think nothing of it. I'm always happy to do what I can."
And at least I'm not the only one with issues.

*Valmont paused at the door, his eyes darting furtively to the side.*
"If you'd refrain from mentioning this... to anyone... I know it's unspoken, old man, but even I have certain limits to where I wish my reputation to lead."
