*Unlike the first time, Enjolras, in a rare gesture of emotion, squeezed back before removing his hand.*
"Either way."

He nodded and went out of the room, resuming his seat at the table where his other two bottles had remained untouched. He decided that he would stay, and whether or not Enjolras saw him on his way out of the little room was Enjolras' choice. For now, he hailed the barman for a carafe of cold water.

*Enjolras sat in one of the chairs and looked at the room, trying to be objective. This wasn't their room any more than the street where they'd raised the barricade was their street. There weren't any ghosts here. Not anymore.*
*It wasn't the place that the ghosts followed; it was Enjolras himself. He still hadn't forgiven himself for getting them killed. He didn't know if he ever would.*

Grantaire would understand that, of course. The same ghosts followed him, though in a different way. He didn't blame himself for getting them killed, he knew he had nothing to do with that. That was the problem. He'd been laying on a table dead drunk as the grape shot and canons went off around him. They'd all died without his knowing, without his caring, without his raising a gun or a voice in defense of any of them.
Except Enjolras. And there had been no noble reason for him to shout his allegiance to the Republic. It had been a lie, his loyalties lay only with friends. But he knew what had happened, what was going to happen, and he'd decided in that lightning sober moment that he couldn't do well without his Apollo. He'd had to touch him just once.

*He'd watched each and every one of them fall. Everything had become a weapon in the desperate fight until the end, when he'd finally laid down the guns, lifted his chin and let the bastards shoot him.*
*After a sizable amount of time, he stood and opened the door to move out into the main room of the cafe. If he had his way, he wouldn't be going back there again.*

Grantaire watched him, pausing the glass of water as his lips and prepared himself to accept whatever Enjolras laid out.

*Enjolras made brief eye contact with Grantaire as he left the room. Did anything really need to be said?*

He watched the man walk past him and set the glass down on the table again. Damnit, being sober was so hard. How did Enjolras do it?
He couldn't read expressions sober--well, he suspected he couldn't read them drunk either, but he could safely imagine their meanings with the excuse of alcohol in his blood if he were wrong--and was uncertain as to what he should do. Should he follow, or give him time? Perhaps he should keep away altogether. Enjolras was married, he vaguely remembered. So he'd been happy and well off until he'd seen Grantaire again.

*Enjolras kept walking, attempting to ignore the memories he had of leaving this place surrounded by friends, rather than alone.*

Eyes lowered to the table in a sort of defeat and his thin, rough hand curled around the neck of the nearest bottle as if to crush the glass. He lifted it and took a few huge gulps of the sickly colored liquid, then shoved his chair back and followed Enjolras, leaving his bottles behind, catching up to the other man and walking silently beside and just behind him.

*It was almost sort of comforting, in a creepy kind of way. He continued to walk in the direction of his house, where he had a very nice brandy in a decanted in the library.*

Grantaire stuffed his hands deep into his pockets and kept quiet as they walked, simply pleased that he hadn't been dismissed right off.

**NEW DAY. WAY POST-BEAST.**
*Enjolras lounged gracefully in one of the chairs one afternoon, glaring disapprovingly at his newspaper.*

*At the next table over, Leia tossed her paper aside bitterly*
"He's only trying to unify Europe-" *began a waitress*
"That's what they always say."
*Leia sipped her coffee, scowling at the picture of Richard III.*

*Enjolras snorted.*
"Unify Europe? Is that what they're calling it now?" *He scoffed, to nobody in particular. His brow furrowed quite perfectly; his hair curled over his face and reflected the light, and those dark blue eyes were alight with the hatred one can only feel for a corrupt government.*
