*Tears filled up her eyes.*
"Marius... Marius they aren't here. I'm alive. I had to climb out of the sewers, but I'm alive. You see my hand?"
*She brandished the all-the-way-through wound scar.*
"I'm alive."

*Marius took her hand and held it gently, looking at it intently, turning it over for a moment before he looked into her eyes.*
"...but...'Ponine...you died in my arms..." *he whispered brokenly.* "Just like Cosette. Both of you were gone...like a nightmare that happened over and over again."

*Eponine bit back sobs.*
"But I didn't die, Marius. I didn't. I'm here."
*Her hands shook.*
"I'm here." *she whispered, looking him straight in the eyes.*

*Marius folded his old friend in his arms and held her close, gently stroking her hair.*
"I couldn't save you...I thought..." *he broke off as tears rolled down his cheeks.*

*Eponine let the tears she had held back for months fall, and wrapped her arms around his torso as tight as she could.*
"But you did save me Marius... you did." *She whispered.* "You thought wrong."

"I'm sorry," *he said softly, his breath stirring her hair lightly.*

*She pressed her face into his chest, taking in the smell of his skin.* "You did nothing wrong." *She said, sniffling. Then she laughed just a little.* "Don't we make a fine pair, sobbing in the middle of a cafe..." *She paused.* "our cafe." *She added, refering to their fallen friends.*

*Tears sprang afresh to his eyes as he stepped back, nodding as he reached out to tuck a loose strand of her hair back behind her ear.*
"So much was lost..."

"Not everything." *She said, taking his hand.* "We're still here, aren't we?" *She paused.* "To be honest, I don't know why Renn and I came here tonight. We were walking, just exploring our neighborhood, when my feet brought me here... to you."

"Well thank God you came to me when you did..."
*His smile was slight, then it collapsed under the weight of his sadness as he buried his face in his hands.*
"I'm so lost without her, 'Ponine!"

*She steeled herself at the mention of Cosette. She understood that he would need time. She took his arm and led him to a table.*
"Maybe you can be found again, Marius." *She said, mostly to herself.*
'Ponine, she knows her way around... *She thought back to when she had said that, watching Marius leave to see Cosette. Why was it that Cosette was always involved in her problems?*

*Marius sat slumped over the table.*
"I killed her..." *he sobbed.*

*Eponine felt her heart clench. She had never liked Cosette all that much, but if Marius thought he had killed her...* "Marius, I know you didn't. You're too kind, and gentle, and wonderful, and..." *She stopped herself before she said anything else.* "I know that it wasn't your fault." *she said, taking his hand again.*

*He wrenched away, as if he was afraid he would poison her with his touch.*
"No...it was...I...she..."
*he bit down on his finger savagely to keep himself from wholly breaking down.*
"We had a little girl..." *he whispered.* "Stillborn...and her mother followed her within the hour."
*He looked up to meet his friend's gaze.*
"I named her Eponine."

*She felt her heart twist again, and her eyes filled up with tears. She clasped his hand tightly. She hadn't think that anybody loved her enough... that anybody thought her good enough... to name their child after. Her free hand immediately went to her own still-flat stomach. Well, mostly still flat. Thankfully, she had refused a corset that night.*
"I'm sure she was beautiful."
((oh you, playing the baby card...))
