*If perhaps there was a sense of jealousy from any of the men he didn't detect it. The word 'classroom' had filled him with fear. He had never been to school.*

*Guido noticed the expression in his eyes and remembered the words he had said when they met. He took the young man aside for a while.*
"As for you, I will give you private lessons until you learn how to read and write." *He said quietly.*
"When you're with the others, pretend as if nothing has happened."

*Sinclair, almost without thinking smiled gratefully at the man. It was surprising this treatment. Almost as if he was good at what he was being told to do.*
"Thank you."

*Guido smiled and placed his hand on Sinclairs shoulder.*
"You remind me so much of my friend Lucky. I will not be surprised if you become just as successful as him. The small reading and writing problem you have is not a big issue in the police. Our job is to catch criminals. So you don't have to be a rocket scientist. Remain in the classroom when the other men leave, and we'll have our first lesson then. I am sure it won't take you long to catch up with the others."

*The lesson itself of course with the other men was a little strange. Still, he listened a lot and at the end of it actually felt he remembered something. Private tutoring was better. The man didn't patronise him at all and as it turned out Sinclair could read more than he had thought. Writing was a different story though, as he was reassured he would pick it up reasonably quickly as well.*

*Guido smiled, pleased with how hard the young man worked, and how easy he kept up with the rest of the group, in spite of his little reading problem. Brunetti however, thought this problem could be solved.*
"Not bad at all, young man. Keep this work up, and you'll easy become a Captain of the force, like my friend Lucky. You won't need many private lessons before you catch up with the others."
*He put the books away in the cabinet.*
"Dinner is at 1630, and then you all have rest of the day off. The lights will be put off at 2130, and then we start up tomorrow at 0430. We will camp out tomorrow, and march from the Academy to the camp in full equipment. Backpacks and all. You'll find everything you need when you get back to your room. Don't forget to polish your weapons."
*He patted Sinclair on the shoulder, in a friendly manner.*
"Ok, soldier. You're dismissed. Go and meet your friends at the dining room."

*Sinclair nodded and left the room. However it was not long before the tell tale aching began. He needed a hit. Still, there was little chance of one here. Rubbing his forehead as a headache began he headed to the dining room*

*Sinclair's new friends received him well and invited him to sit with them and eat. Guido Brunetti went home to his family for the day, and another officer took over the guard. He was sitting in Brunetti's office, reading a book, and was available for anyone that had a question or needed help of any kind.*

*After a while Sinclair returned to his room to sleep, pale and ill looking.*

***TWO MONTHS LATER***
*Guido Brunetti entered Sinclair's room after knocking on the door. He held a letter in his hand, and was smiling.*
"Good morning, Sinclair. I have just received the application form for the Officer school. Didn't I say that you could do it?"

*Sinclair looked up from the work at his desk. He looked, well, stupidly surprised. A slow smile grew over his face.*
"Really?."
*He hadn't expected it, had only really filled it in because he had been told to. Still, an Officer. Imagine it, him respectable again.*
"I would never have imagined it."

*Guido sat down on the other chair in the room and handed the letter over to Sinclair. He smiled proudly. He could still remember the day Sinclair and he had filled out the form. The other officers had laughed at Brunetti, and said that he had let his heart run off with him, and that the boy never would make it. But Brunetti had been stubborn and filled out the form anyway. The boy had worked hard for this, and he earned it.*
"Here, read it yourself!" *There was a hint of pride and joy in Brunetti's voice. He was just as proud as he would have been if his own son had joined the police forces.*

*Sinclair scanned the letter with relative ease. It was stupid now to think of a time when he couldn't understand words. Now he was even being to read books, for enjoyment of all things. As he got to the bottom he raised an eyebrow.*
"That is a large salary, I could have a house on that."
*He looked up at Guido and grinned.*
"Thank you, I cannot explain how grateful I am. I might have been passed out in a gutter now, save for you."

*Guido chuckled with laughter and placed his hand on Sinclair's shoulder.*
"I told you you could make it. I have said so all the time. You remind me of my friend, Lucky. Who happen to be the head master of the Officer school. All I did, was sending him a letter and putting in a good word for you. He wrote right back and said that he can't wait to meet you."
*He stood up and turned to Sinclair.*
"So... when are you leaving for the Officer School?"

"Next week, they said."
*He frowned.*
"I have to go to Nice for two years."
